Brooklyn A seeks a short-term staff attorney (FT or PT) for its Preserving Affordable Housing program with at least 3 years’ landlord litigation experience to include non-payment, holdover, HP, 7A, and harassment proceedings in Housing Court as well as Supreme Court. The work will include frequent motion practice, discovery, depositions, communication with clients, negotiations with opposing counsel and advocacy with outside agencies on behalf of clients.

The Preserving Affordable Housing Program uses legal and advocacy strategies to preserve and protect affordable housing, prevent evictions, combat tenant harassment and discrimination, and ensure that working families, individuals, older adults and others live in stable environments and within their financial means. PAH works to stop such pernicious practices in our neighboring communities by bringing innovative, affirmative litigation to protect tenants’ rights and their homes; defending tenants in eviction proceedings; representing tenants in administrative proceedings and providing advice and legal services to help improve conditions in their homes and buildings. In collaboration with organizers from local community-based organizations and coalitions, the program conducts Know-Your-Rights housing workshops, clinics, and other educational outreach activities to ensure that tenants are aware of their protections under housing laws.

To be successful in this role, you must have:

To be successful in this role, you must have admission to the bar of the State of New York and experience working in New York civil and/or Federal, or other relevant public interest litigation; housing law experience. In addition, you should have a passion for social justice and helping and representing individuals facing eviction and tenant association. As a valued team member, you will have a client-based focus and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The most important competencies for the role are: 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and local organizations with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Excellent legal writing, transactional, advocacy skills in English, second language/ Spanish or other second language preferred;
  • Strong project management skills and attention to details;
  • Ability to work independently with strong motivation, to manage a high caseload, track case data, meet deadlines, and to be flexible;
  • Experience managing case management systems to ensure accurate data collection and statistical tracking;
  • Computer proficiency sufficient to independently review and generate legal writings; and
  • Thorough commitment to Brooklyn A’s mission and commitment to public interest work and furthering neighborhood-based community development in low-income communities.
