EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Who we are:

The Asian American Power Network (AAPN) is a new formation of state-based Asian American 501c4 organizations building a coordinated national strategy for power, beyond representation, to win concrete changes for our local communities and build solidarity with aligned communities of color. Toward that end we allocate and raise the necessary resources to execute our strategy; and accelerate the development of new AAPI organizations through coaching and capacity building. We develop shared political assessments of our communities; hone best practices and tactics for AAPI voter engagement; and implement political strategy to move AAPIs broadly toward progressive policy and racial justice generally. AAPN will complement and augment work done in states by AAPI c4 organizations, foster the necessary development of new groups, and invest in leadership pathways for young and emerging AAPI political organizers and community leaders. AAPN is a fiscally sponsored project of Center for Empowered Politics.

Position Overview:

AAPN seeks a full-time Executive Director who will lead the network and staff team to carry out the following program to advance state-level AAPI power-building:

1.    Organizational development of state Anchors organizations to build strong 501c4 administrative, financial, and political infrastructure.

2.    Build pathways for the professional development of directors- and program-level staff to meet the needs of growing Asian American 501c4 organizations in the next 5-10 years.

3.    Develop and advance a clear strategy for progressive Asian American power-building at the state and federal levels.

To be successful in this job you will excel in the following areas:

●     Political Analysis and Strategy: provide strategic thinking and leadership to develop and implement AAPN’s strategic long term organizing vision, power building program, and annual political plans.

●     Network Building: uphold AAPN’s core values and support member organizations in their powerbuilding goals. Provide strong facilitation and motivating leadership that results in an effective and cohesive collaborative structure. Develop the network to reach key milestones while maintaining the network’s long term vision and agenda.

●     Fundraising & Financial Management: lead AAPN’s fundraising strategy, cultivate and maintain relationships with funders. Prepare and manage AAPI4CE’s annual budget; Ensure appropriate internal controls and compliance.

●     Staff Supervision: recruit, develop and supervise staff team to carry out political and programmatic work with excellence.

●     Steering Committee Management: Support and facilitate the AAPN’s Steering Committee with staff support to build up infrastructure, strategy and carry out the programmatic work.

●     Relationship Building: Cultivate & maintain healthy relationships with Asian American networks, funders, state-based organizations, unions, operatives, national networks, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications:

●     Demonstrated success with community organizing or labor organizing campaigns, coalition / network building, and experience in at least two cycles of leading electoral campaigns.

●     Excellent skills in political analysis, developing long-term vision and strategy, fundraising, interpersonal communication and facilitation.

●     Understanding and ability to advocate for the power building role of state based organizations.

●     Demonstrated commitment to racial, gender, immigrant and economic justice and their intersections.

●     Self-starter, able to work independently.

●     Demonstrated success in fundraising and funder cultivation.

●     Management skills in budget/financial management, staff supervision, staff development, network and steering committee management. For this position, we ask that you have experience managing multiple staff for at least one full year (longer than a campaign cycle). 

●     Knowledge and experience in campaign compliance and reporting for 501c3, 501c4, PAC organizations, independent expenditure and coordinated campaigns.

●     Experience organizing with Asian American communities is a plus.

●     Relationships with national political organizations, party infrastructure, national players, and experience organizing on federal legislation is a plus.

●     An understanding of the existing gaps in Asian American political research, polling, and voter file data, and an excitement to work with stakeholders across multiple infrastructures to fix them, is a plus. 

Position location:

Location is flexible, but must be willing to travel to Washington DC and other national meeting locations on a regular basis.

Salary & Benefits:

This position comes with an estimated salary of $100,000-$120,000 per year with health, dental, vision, paid vacation and paid parental leave.
