Communications Director - The Rental Affordability Act Campaign

Temp (until Dec 1, 2020) with possibility to become permanent staff on the Housing Is A Human Right team.


This position is a Director of Communications position for the Rental Affordability Act ballot measure campaign, which will appear on the CA ballot in Nov 2020.


Essential duties & responsibilities include the following – with other duties that may be assigned:

·     Develop and implement an integrated, strategic communications plan for the Rental Affordability Act, and to strengthen brand awareness for the campaign.

·     Create a brand, marketing and public relations strategy that will allow the RAA to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high level external audiences, including the media, public officials, key influencers and the general voting public

·     Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the Rental Affordability Act campaign. Work with the Campaign Director and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them

·     Build, cultivate and manage a roster of speakers and testimonials for use on the Rental Affordability Act campaign

·     Oversee, or execute as needed, all copy intended for public consumption to ensure its alignment with the strategic communications plan alongside the AHF Media department

·     Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of all print and branded materials alongside the AHF Media department

·     Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of electronic communications, including the Housing Is a Human Right and Rental Affordability Act website, electronic newsletters and other electronic communications

·     Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed

·     Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the campaign and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance, as well as special events, public announcements, and other projects

·     Manage relationships with any communications related vendors or consultants

·     Monitors the RAA earned media hits & sends out a weekly report of them.

·     Light social media posting for HHR (3-4 posts per week; primarily reposting RAA content) and sends weekly HHR Social Media Report.

·     Posts 3-5 articles each week to the RAA website’s NEWS section

·     Drafts copy for all (daily) donation e-blasts and submits them for copyedits at least 1 week ahead of their scheduled release date.

·     Drafts copy for RAA materials, one sheets, and website as needed.

·     Drafts press releases for RAA when needed, puts them out on Businesswire and to local reports at least the day before events/press conferences occur. 

·     Adapts press releases into e-blasts and sends to SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER for MailChimp layout/emailing.

·     Teases RAA stories to reporters, reaches out to reporters with corrections when needed.

·     Travels to and organizes press conferences and press events when needed.

·     Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

Graduated from a 2- or 4-year accredited university, plus 3+ years Communications/PR experience.


Computer/Software Skills and Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, this person must have working knowledge of Excel, Word Processing, Power Point, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Outlook, general contact management, and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.


Language Skills:

Exceptional language skills required. Ability to write reports and business correspondence; present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, patients, customers and the general public. Ability to write press releases, mass emails, and copyedit are a must.


Other Skills and Abilities/Qualifications:

  • Must be able to travel up to 30% of the time.
  • A knowledge of current events, politics, and housing justice activism are a plus.
