Syrian Community Network (SCN) is a nonprofit social services agency headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. SCN serves refugees and immigrants regardless of country of origin but predominantly focuses on Arabic-speakers. Through case management, education, and immigration programs, SCN builds community and serves families by addressing their evolving needs.

Position Overview

The Education Director is responsible for the development, management and implementation of all education programs at SCN including but not limited to youth after school and tutoring programs, adult courses, and education case management. The Education Director will work closely with the Director of Operations, staff, and community partners to develop programs that meet the short- and long-term needs of newcomers.

Due to current COVID positivity levels in the city of Chicago, staff are not currently required to work from the office every day. However, we are offering in-person after school programming and following protocols set by Chicago Public Schools for health and safety of staff and students. Should program staff need additional support on certain days, the Education Director will be required to step in. Staff, volunteers, and students will be required to mask at all times, and a health check will be conducted for each individual upon arrival to the center.

Director Duties

  • Oversee the quality and success of all aspects of education programming including: operations; management of staff, volunteers, and interns; and stakeholder relationships
  • Implement effective programming to meet community  and funder standards, including soliciting student and parent feedback, defining KPIs, creating program measurement tools, managing data collection, and assisting in internal and external reporting
  • Develop strategic long-term program expansion goals and budgets with the Director of Operations and Executive Director 
  • Oversee daily operations that support and implement our current program objectives
  • Supervise hire, train, and coach program staff in various tasks and general staff development
  • Assess and manage programmatic capacity - be able to assess the risks and rewards associated with departmental changes
  • Prepare and maintain department budgets and oversee programmatic spending in Education programming  
  • Attend community events to represent education programs and the organization
  • Maintain and cultivate program partnerships with school sites and other nonprofits and also identify future partners 
  • Support fundraising strategies and events when requested by the Executive Director and Development Director 
  • Manage intern and volunteer programs for the department in conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator

 

Program Development Duties

  • Develops culturally responsive programming and curricula for education programming at Syrian Community Network 
  • Instruct programming as necessary alongside the Education Manger and Youth Program Teacher
  • Ensure the smooth and proper functioning of current education programs
  • Monitor all program data and deliverables (attendance, academic gains, etc) 
  • Provide the support and guidance necessary to each client and/or family
  • Elicit feedback for program improvements from community, staff,  and stakeholders
  • Provide guidance around the solicitation of in-kind donations of programmatic supplies (as needed) 

 

Education Case Management (ECM) Duties

  • Lead and manage the daily operations of the Education Case Management program
  • Ensure the smooth and proper functioning of current ECM initiatives 
  • Connecting clients with academic support both internally and/or externally
  • Assisting clients in developing plans for addressing their long-and-short term academic needs and goals
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders (Chicago Public Schools, Evanston Public Schools, Skokie Public Schools, etc) 
  • Accurately updating and maintaining record keeping established by Director of Operations

 

 Key Skills and Competencies

  • Relevant educational background, ex: English Language instruction, and a minimum of 5 years of programmatic experience
  • Fluency in Arabic, preferred but not required
  • Understanding of Middle Eastern culture
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Commitment to social justice and basic understanding of issues affecting refugees 
  • Knowledge of Salesforce, Google products, Microsoft Office preferred


Supervisory Responsibility

 This position manages all Education staff, currently including the Education Program Manager and Youth Program Teacher, and reports to the Director of Operations.
