Active Citizen Project (ACP) is seeking a full-time Farm Operations Director for Project EATS.


ABOUT PROJECT EATS


Project EATS operates 12 agricultural farms spanning almost 5 acres located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Queens. We work to create a sustainable network of community-based farms that make urban agriculture a viable source of food production in New York City.


Through our work we make nutritious food available and affordable in communities where people live on low incomes.  Provide an engine for creating community-based food economies. Create hubs for social, economic, and cultural activities and innovation that make it possible for everyone to live healthy lives and thrive in their communities regardless of income.


POSITION OVERVIEW


The Farm Operations Director reports to the President and oversees operations at the 12 existing farms, installation of 2 new greenhouses, and opening of 2 new rooftop farms in 2019. The Farm Operations Director ensures that PE farms are well maintained and producing high quality crops for neighborhood markets and commercial sales, while mindful of the goal to use farming as a vehicle to create ways for people to engage in the stewardship, cultivation, and utilization of their resources for healthy life and well-being in their communities.


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and Oversight of Operations, and Expansion of Farm Sites:

·      Develop and execute an annual crop plan that aligns with demand for PE food and products

·      Manage farms to maximize yields, minimize crop loss, and meet PE food quality, safety, and security standards

·      Expand growing area on existing sites and design and establish new farm sites when necessary

·      Coordinate with Sales Manager to develop crop and harvest plan that supports sales needs

·      Maintain inventory and the clean and orderly storage of tools equipment and supplies

·      Meet PE performance and work safety standards

·      Manage waste organics collection and composting

·      Monitor and maintain crop health in field and greenhouse and respond to issues

·      Have proficiency in operation and care of all farm equipment

·      Follow weather reports and organize assigned work schedule accordingly and efficiently

·      Maintain farm sites to agreed upon standards


Management of Farm Staff:

·      Assign work, provide farm goals, performance standards and oversee timesheets for farm staff

·      Monitor and review work with farm staff and provide regular reports to ACP management

·      Create agenda for and lead monthly performance reviews with Assistant Farmers and attend ACP staff meetings

·      Know and perform work in accordance with PE standards and ensure that apprentices and volunteers do as well

·      Provide clear daily and weekly goals to staff to be accomplished each week

·      Maintain and foster a respectful work environment

·      Create opportunities in daily farm work and operations for community involvement

·      Work with staff that develop community programs, activities, special projects, and events at the farms


Creation and Maintenance of Annual Budgets, Records, and Inventory:

·      Maintain timely harvest and sales records with digital platforms

·      Develop and manage approved annual budget for farm labor, tools, equipment, seeds, supplies

·      Provide feedback and recommendations on how to achieve and improve general operations

·      Maintain optimal staffing hours for farm staff


QUALIFICATIONS


·      At least 5 years of experience with soil farming

·      At least 3 years of experience managing farm operations

·      Experienced in organic farming techniques

·      Ability to manage small plot, high yield network of farms

·      Education in Agriculture, Horticulture, or Environmental Science

·      Knowledge of rooftop farming a plus
