SCOPE

South Bronx United seeks a College Access Coordinator to launch a new program with its Global Youth League beginning in September 2021. The position will work with high school students who participate in the program to assist them in preparing for college and careers and support seniors through the college application and enrollment process. The majority of youth are from immigrant backgrounds. The coordinator will work with one cohort who attend various schools and a second cohort from a specific school partner.

The coordinator will work independently but receive support from SBU’s Director of College Guidance, who supports seniors in the SBU Academy. In that program, 100% of the high school seniors in the past nine years have graduated high school, and 93% have gone on to attend college. Collaboration with other program staff, volunteers, and soccer coaches is needed to achieve the overall mission of the organization to impact youth outcomes and organization development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Coordinator’s responsibilities will include:

1. Plan and facilitate weekly college prep sessions for high school students.

• Set objectives and target outcomes for a year-long college prep workshop.

• Plan a syllabus of college prep sessions for high school seniors and juniors, including a writing and college awareness focus for juniors.

• Facilitate weekly afterschool or evening sessions with several student cohorts.

• Assess success at reaching session and workshop objectives and students’ target outcomes.

2. Counsel high school seniors through the college selection, recruitment, application, and enrollment processes.

• Evaluate students’ academic profile to ensure they have completely relevant requirements to graduate high school.

• Analyze students’ personal, academic, and financial profiles to best counsel them on what colleges or what types of post-secondary options might be good fits.

• Support seniors through the financial aid and scholarship process.

• Support students in the preparation and transition from middle school to college.

3. Support students through other post-secondary and career options.

• Evaluate post-secondary options for each student include those who might not be on track for college.

• Research and work with non-college, post-secondary, and career preparation opportunities and programs.

• Work with individual students for whom other post-secondary options might be most appropriate for their long-term goals and success.

• Help students find summer internships and/or other enrichment opportunities.

4. Communicate with and advocate with internal and external collaborators to help students reach college.

• Conduct outreach to college representatives in support of applicants, including school admission personnel, financial aid representatives, and athletic coaches.

• Work with high school guidance counselors, teachers, and other school personnel to support participants.

• Communicate and support parents around key issues and challenges that impact first-generation college student achievement.

• Train and supervise volunteer tutors and mentors to work with participants during the sessions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The College Access Coordinator should meet the following requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree required.

• At least two years of experience working with high school students in teaching, guidance counseling, youth development, or program management.

• Experience with college guidance, college prep programs, and/or other post-secondary programs preferred.

• Knowledge of the New York state college application process and financial aid process, including family requirements.

• Knowledge of the NYC public school system and graduation requirements.

• Effective in multi-cultural and cross-cultural settings and understanding of individuals of all backgrounds.

• Excellent interpersonal, mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.

• Independent, flexible, and adaptable to work in a variety of settings.

• Strong administrative, computer, and writing skills.

• Passionate for the mission of South Bronx United.

• Familiarity with the South Bronx community or other neighboring communities is preferred.

• Spanish and/or French proficiency is a plus.

TIME

Full-time, requires some evening and weekend hours.

COMPENSATION

Expected compensation range is $40,000 - $50,000 commensurate with experience.
