Student U is a college-access and success organization that believes all students in Durham have the ability to succeed. The Work

The Middle School Student U After-School Wellness Instructor role is designed for educators with some experience within the Student U community, as well as experience in creating a positive classroom culture and leading groups of students. These candidates believe fervently in the brilliance and potential of our students. Wellness instructors work weekly with class of 10-12 middle school students, acting as the instructor for a chosen wellness activity (including both athletics and/or social/emotional wellness). Students will have the opportunity to choose Wellness activities monthly, so instructors will work with one group of students for four consecutive sessions/classes before rotating to a new group of students.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Create a culture rooted in love and high expectations that is inclusive and supportive of all students
  • Build positive, supportive, and professional relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Lead weekly “Wellness Wednesday” sessions with students in a given sport and/or activity:
  • Plan four 40-minute classes that introduce students to game and/or activity objectives, teach them skills and/or guidelines necessary for participating, and allow students to play/participate in the activity
  • Hold students to high interpersonal expectations, particularly in activities that could become competitive; maintain a culture that is positive and safe for all students
  • Collaborate with other After-school Instructors and Program Coordinators to ensure that all components of the day run effectively and efficiently
  • Collaborate with program staff to reflect on teaching practices and ensure high-quality instruction
  • Work with program staff to collect data and participate in the evaluation of Year Round Programming
  • Demonstrate the Student U Core Values in all interactions with Student U stakeholders (students, families, guests, volunteers, supporters)


Commitment: September 14, 2018 to May 9, 2019 Wednesdays, 4:50 pm - 5:50 pm + planning time
