Silver Lining Mentoring empowers youth in foster care to thrive through committed mentoring relationships and the development of essential life skills. For over 15 years, Silver Lining Mentoring has enjoyed continuous growth and success in matching youth in the child welfare system with highly committed volunteer mentors for an average of over 4.5 years per match. Silver Lining Mentoring also works with young people who are preparing to age out of the child welfare system by teaching critical life skills to help teens successfully transition to adulthood. Silver Lining Mentoring continues to be among only a few mentoring organizations in the United States, and the only mentoring organization in Massachusetts, that exclusively serves the unique needs of youth in the foster care system. Position Summary

The External Relations Manager (ERM) is a key member of the development and communications team at Silver Lining Mentoring. This person is responsible for ensuring high quality communications and execution of events that engage the public, donors, and potential volunteers in the mission of SLM. The ERM works collaboratively with the Director of Development, Chief Executive Officer and all other members of the development and program teams to manage and implement external communications and development events. The ERM is responsible, along with the Director of Development, for developing and implementing an intentional communications strategy that includes traditional, social, one-to-one and event-based communications platforms.



  • Update Silver Lining Mentoring Website as needed in order to keep content current and engaging
  • Work collaboratively to create content and design for Silver Lining Mentoring monthly e-newsletter
  • Maintain an active social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn
  • Create and update all marketing materials ensuring consistent SLM branding and messaging
  • Help create and manage SLM’s video library, incorporating it into communications strategy
  • Coordinate with outside resources including but not limited to graphic designers, web designers, printers, etc.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to produce bi-weekly SLM blog
  • Create and use photo library of images that help tell SLM’s unique story


  • Work with Director of Development to create and implement an intentional development plan that includes cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising events
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development, host committee, and SLM board to plan and execute annual fundraising gala in May. Coordinate all logistics for the event, including the silent and live auctions; night-of logistics and design; management of event space and catering; and volunteer coordination
  • Support SLM’s Boston Marathon runners by serving as liaison with John Hancock Non-Profit Partners Program and the Marathon Coalition training team
  • Support SLM’s Rodman Ride team by serving as liaison with Mass Mentoring Partnership and The Rodman Ride for Kids
  • Serve as primary contact for the Board of Ambassadors and work with this young professional group to introduce Silver Lining Mentoring to new audiences
  • Plan and execute cultivation and stewardship events including but not limited to the Board of Ambassador events and donor cultivation events
  • Maintain and update database through timely data entry

  • People of color and people with experience in foster care are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience planning external events
  • Planning, organization and time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Positive attitude, sense of humor, and willingness to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Two to four years of experience working in the non-profit or for-profit sector preferred
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word; WordPress; Constant Contact; and the Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop and InDesign)
  • Experience with Salesforce a plus
  • Position requires local travel and attendance at events/activities on occasional evenings and/or weekends
