TRLA seeks a full-time paralegal for its Proyecto de Ayuda para Solicitantes de Asilo (PASA), which provides pro bono legal services to asylum-seekers affected by changes in immigration enforcement and asylum policies near Laredo, Texas—specifically those subject to the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). Asylum seekers are fleeing from the highest levels of violence in the Western Hemisphere, and the majority have endured traumatic experiences, including sexual assault, robbery, extortion, and other acts of extreme abuse and cruelty. PASA paralegals will help provide critical legal services to survivors of violence and trauma.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERENCES:

Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to immigrants’ rights and social justice, experience working with diverse populations including non-English-speaking immigrant communities, experience working with survivors of trauma, and a degree in a relevant field, or relevant work experience.

DUTIES

All candidates should possess a sense of urgency to advocate for asylum-seekers, empathy, and the ability to stay calm in the midst of crisis. The paralegal will work under the supervision of a lawyer and will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Conduct eligibility and substantive interviews in person and by telephone/video chat;
  • Develop specialized knowledge of asylum law and procedure;
  • Provide basic information and referrals to applicants including those ineligible for services;
  • Interview and prepare clients and witnesses for testimony;
  • Conduct follow-up of assigned cases, including investigating facts and researching law;
  • Assist with translation and interpretation services;
  • Maintain accurate and complete client files and administrative records, including data entry into client database and other requirements;

  • Communicate with stakeholders, including US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), US Customs and Border Protection (CBP); and US Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS);
  • Communicate with clients and their loved ones;
  • Participate in community group meetings and educational forums to conduct intake, outreach and community education; and
  • Any other duties required by PASA attorneys.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fluency in English and Spanish;
  • Excellent word processing, internet, and office skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team;
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; and
  • Located in or willing to re-locate to Laredo.
