GreenWave seeks a knowledgeable, reliable, team-oriented individual with a command of macroalgae seeding and cultivation to fulfill our Science Lead position. Reporting to the Programs Manager and Deputy Director, the Science Lead will 1) oversee and track the growth of sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) in our New Haven, CT seaweed hatchery 2) collaborate with the Hatchery Manager and Hatchery Technician to ensure seamless operation of our hatchery facilities and 3) coordinate closely with program staff to develop outplanting schedules and kelp seed transport plans, among other activities. This is a hands-on, temporary part-time (15-20 hours/week) position (July 2018 through mid-January 2019) based in New Haven, CT.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Execute GreenWave hatchery protocols and procedures
  • Steward growth of kelp from spore to blade, to produce 200+ spools of seedstring
  • Oversee induced sporing, sorus preparation, kelp seeding, and nutrient management
  • Complete weekly spore and blade measurements to monitor kelp growth
  • Oversee record keeping and evaluate log reports
  • Conduct weekly check-ins with the Hatchery Manager and Hatchery Technician
  • Troubleshoot and respond to growth or contamination issues quickly and comprehensively
  • Develop kelp outplanting estimates and coordinate the outplanting schedule, with assistance from the Hatchery Manager
  • Assist Hatchery Manager and Hatchery Technician with routine maintenance, as needed
  • Contribute to end-of-season hatchery shut down

  • Graduate degree and 2+ years of pertinent work experience in a lab or hatchery preferred
  • Comfortable taking direction as well as guiding a team through a successful hatchery season
