Job Description

Help us to elevate our finance department's function by joining us as a Controller. We are building a finance function to achieve excellence in financial management by providing accurate, timely and useful financial information to IRC leadership and programs and by adhering to high standard financial practices and accounting principles.



JOB OVERVIEW



The Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities, ensuring financial information is timely, accurate, complete and compliant with relevant accounting principles. The ideal candidate Is a change agent that drives industry financial best practices across the organization and will work closely with the finance leadership team as well as the Operations team. The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $750 million. The position reports to the CFO, is closely aligned with Deputy CFO, and manages an overall team of 13 employees, 2 of them will be direct reports.



The Controller will:


  • Provide leadership and management to Finance (corporate and field), measured by the effectiveness, engagement and business unit respect of the team
  • Build productive working relationships with stakeholders in order to understand their business operations and the financial information needs of end users
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain and analyze the general ledger accounting records, conduct research and resolve technical accounting issues and oversee month-end close and general ledger activity. Ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Collaborate, design, implement and review finance systems, policies and procedures to ensure continuous improvement and contemporary relevant practices
  • Manages all fund accounting and reporting, particularly related to restricted contributions and net assets
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue and actual expenditures
  • Coordinates all HQ audit activity, including the 2 CFR 200 US government audit. Oversees the preparation of the Form 990, 990T and other required tax returns
  • Leads tax planning and compliance with federal, state and other applicable taxes. Work with Director of HR, finance and payroll officers to prepare and complete tax information in coordination with external tax advisors
  • Analyze and review accounting administration policies and oversee appropriate internal controls. Provide effective supervision to accounting staff by ensuring standard accounting principles as well as IRC processes and procedures are followed in keeping the IRC's financial records
  • Monitor IRC's retirement plans (403(b), 457(b) and 457(f)) plans which includes making contributions and submitting annual reports and other required documentation. Work with third-party administrator on year-end compliance and required forms
  • Oversee finance systems managing transaction flows from source through interfaces to general ledger
  • Build team and individual capabilities, ensuring individual effectiveness for work in current and future roles
  • Drive progress against department KPIs

Educational Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree (BS) in accounting
  • CPA required

Experience Requirements


  • Minimum 12+ years related experience in accounting with increasing scope of responsibilities
  • Experience in non-profit accounting required and NGO experience preferred
  • Minimum 7 years progressive managerial experience in the financial management of an organization

  • Demonstrated capability in leading & managing a diverse finance team and a practical understanding of most current management practices

  • Outstanding computer literacy: Excel (mastery), SUN Systems, Dynamics 365 or similar system required
