Position: Outreach Specialist

Department: Communications and Outreach Team

Location (s): East Harlem

Reports To: Communications and Outreach Manager

Classification: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

The Violence Intervention Program, Inc. (VIP) was established in 1984 as a grassroots response to domestic and sexual violence in Latina/o/x communities. VIP has always centered survivors in its leadership and has worked to create a community of staff that reflects the rich national, ethnic and racial diversity of the communities it serves. VIP runs three community-based social service programs, two residential housing programs, citywide economic justice and sexual violence projects, and a robust communications and outreach team.

The Outreach Specialist promotes VIP’s mission and vision by raising awareness about domestic and sexual violence and connecting survivors to our services. The Outreach Specialist plays a supportive role in establishing and sustaining strong relationships with a diverse set of community stakeholders, targeting Latina/o/x community members. This position is a part of VIP’s dynamic Communications & Outreach (C&O) Team and reports to the C&O Team Manager. The Outreach Specialist will work closely with the Senior Outreach Specialist on planning, coordinating and promoting outreach activities. Reporting and data collection are also part of the responsibilities.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate VIP participation at coalitions and in collaborative partnerships with other city and social service organizations and agencies; attend meetings and events, as needed;
  • Conduct educational and preventive workshops on domestic and sexual violence in both English and Spanish for community members, social service providers, and other stakeholders;
  • Establish and maintain linkages with external stakeholders and community partners to enhance messaging campaigns and to deepen and expand partnerships;
  • Collaborate with design and communications staff to develop culturally specific informational and know your rights materials, as well as support social media messaging campaigns;
  • Collaborate with community organizing staff and Promotoras Team to support their development and promote their community-based events and campaigns;
  • Enter, collect, and analyze data to enhance service delivery for the purpose of achieving outcomes and complying with funder requirements;
  • Participate in supervision, staff meetings and program meetings;
  • Perform other tasks as required, including any related supervisory and administrative duties, as needed.

Requirements

  • High School degree;
  • Some experience in communications, community organizing, community education, or relevant field;
  • Must be fluent (oral and written) in English and Spanish;
  • Must be excellent communicator, both verbal and written;
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships across departments;
  • Must have a passion for current events and commitment to keeping VIP community fully informed of important political and social issues impacting our mission;
  • Must be knowledgeable in working with diverse communities, particularly Latina/o/x, people of color, and low income populations;
  • Must be well organized, assertive, able to work independently and collaboratively, while maintaining a flexible schedule;
  • Must be active listener;
  • Ability to lift minimum of 30 lbs. and travel via public transportation (bus, train, etc.);
  • Must have the ability to operate office equipment such as computers, copy machine, fax machine, phone systems, etc. with strong internet and software skills; incl. Microsoft Office and client database;
  • Flexible schedule to respond to VIP staff needs, including frequent nights and weekends;
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and sensitivity at all times;
  • Must ensure agency, program and client confidentiality at all times;
  • Great sense of humor a huge plus.
