Serve for Justice with Avodah’s Jewish Service Corps in the New York City Jews of Color Bayit

Applications are open for the 2020-2021 Avodah's Jewish Service Corps, a year long program for self-identified Jews of Color (JOCs) between the ages 21-26 to build a lifetime of leadership skills, an active Jewish community, a powerful professional network, and a more just America.

Spend a year serving for justice at a leading anti-poverty organization while living in a JOC community and learning at the crossroads of justice and Jewish life.  

We’re looking for leaders and not-yet-leaders, activists and organizers, challah bakers, cookout champions and Shabbat dinner hosts, teachers, learners, and everyone in between to pursue social and economic justice with Avodah. As a member of the Jewish Services Corps, you will:

• Build real-world expertise with critical, hands-on work experience. 

You’ll be placed with one of Avodah’s partner organizations in New York City. Through on-the-ground direct service work, you'll contribute meaningfully to our partners’ work on crucial justice issues such as immigration, hunger, education, public health, domestic violence, and much more. 

• Engage in racial justice and activism work in a supportive JOC community. Avodah’s trusted, innovative curriculum examines the causes and effects of equity disparities, develops practical skills, and looks at justice work with a Jewish lens. The JOC Bayit programming will deepen, contextualize, and nourish your day-to-day work while preparing you to stay in social and economic justice movements for the long haul.

•  Live and learn in the dynamic Avodah JOC Bayit. Home-cooked meals, occasional cookouts, late night conversations, and culturally diverse holiday celebrations make living communally in the JOC bayit (house) memorable and meaningful.

• Build JOC leadership skills and develop professional networks. Connect with JOC-led organizations, learn from JOC leaders and mentors, and build a diverse lifelong professional network. You’ll learn skills around navigating majority white non-profit spaces while having the opportunity to grow into your own authentic leadership style..

• Access activism, professional development, and Jewish opportunities for life. Over a thousand social justice leaders across the country serve as active, engaged members of our alumni community. They’ll help you with everything from apartment hunts to job references to holiday meals invites.

In addition to a year of professional and personal growth, Corps Members receive a monthly living stipend, health insurance, travel allowance, and subsidized housing. The program will run August 2021- August 2022.
