Position Summary: The Senior Attorney will provide legal advice and direction on very complex matters to various clients, including those involved in Development, Marketing, Corporate Engagement, External Affairs, Finance and conservation functions of the organization. They will advise clients primarily on philanthropic activities including counsel on structures and restrictions on tax exempt organizations; charitable donations classification and deductibility; state solicitation regulations; charitable gift annuities; professional solicitors and fundraising counsel; consumer protection; unrelated business income tax and private benefit. Applies highly developed analytical and risk management skills to serve organizational needs efficiently and effectively. Clearly articulates complex legal concepts and options to Project Managers, other Attorneys, Senior Leaders and the Board of Directors. Ensures that transactions and activities are legally sound and consistent with the Conservancy’s mission, authority, policies, and procedures.

 

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent and license to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
  • Seven (7) years relevant legal experience.
  • Experience negotiating complex, sensitive or high-profile transactions and agreements.
  • Experience in additional areas of practice.
  • Law firm or in-house charity/tax-exempt organization experience.
  • Law firm or in-house experience advising sophisticated clients and senior management.
  • Experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals.
  • Experience in estate/gift planning.
  • Experience managing attorneys, paralegals and/or legal support staff.
  • Working knowledge of current trends in relevant discipline.
  • Multi-cultural experience appreciated.
