Position Summary:  Children's Aid's Development team is expanding! Working in partnership with the Director of Institutional Giving, primary responsibility is to lead the grant writing team in creating compelling, outcomes-driven, and client-ready letters of inquiry, proposals, reports, and other correspondence for a diverse audience of foundation and corporate donors (both current and prospective). Additional responsibilities include overseeing the full grant calendar and creating systems to improve department efficiency. This position reports to the Director of Institutional Giving and supervises three direct reports. The ideal candidate is strategic and enjoys managing and cultivating a team.  


Responsibilities:


Team Management & Cross-Functional Collaboration (40%)

  • Serve as thought partner to Director by managing up, troubleshooting, and collaborating on strategic approaches to achieve year-over-year private revenue growth
  • Foster culture of accountability and work with team to establish individual financial performance goals
  • Manage three-person grant writing team in prospect research, proposal writing, and grant reporting. Edit drafts and provide in-depth coaching to junior team members. 
  • Guide staff in proactively identifying cultivation opportunities among funders in respective portfolios and analyzing prospect likelihood
  • Arrange and conduct site visits and assure timely, accurate and strategic follow-up with funders and prospective supporters
  • Oversee team’s use of Raiser’s Edge database to manage relationships, track grants received, reports due, pending proposals, and prospects
  • Ensure close collaboration between Institutional Giving and other internal departments to create informed proposals responsive to programmatic needs, direction and capacity
  • Collaborate with development operations, divisional budget directors, and fiscal staff to ensure proper classification and designation of grants and ensure accurate reporting on individual project budgets


Portfolio Management (50%)

  • Develop, write, and assemble proposals and reports to corporations and foundations
  • Promote ongoing stewardship with funders through customized communication and the distribution of publications including annual reports, newsletters and event invitations
  • Work closely with program staff to generate narrative content and project budgets
  • Monitor compliance with grant deliverables and outcomes
  • Conduct research on social service related issues and integrate findings, including statistics into work product
  • Maintain corporate and foundation donor files and Raiser’s Edge records
  • As needed, travel to Children’s Aid sites across NYC (Harlem, South Bronx, Washington Heights, and northern Staten Island) to meet with staff and gather information for proposal development
  • Coordinate prep for donor site visits
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and events, as requested, to keep current in the fields of child welfare and education as it pertains to Children’s Aid programs


Systems Management (10%)

  • Manage pipeline and calendar of both prospective and active funders
  • Collaborate with executive staff to project annual operating budget 
  • Act as partner to Director of Institutional Giving in implementing new systems and tools to improve department efficiency and effectiveness


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 4+ years grant writing experience required
  • 1-2 years of supervision experience required
  • Experience writing for sophisticated, data-driven funder audiences required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience in developing budgets
  • Detail and deadline oriented, with an ability to work well under pressure
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Previous experience with CRM databases, such as Raiser’s Edge preferred
