HEALTH EDUCATION SPECIALIST

  General Description

The Health Education Specialist is primarily responsible for delivering our Puberty Talk and Teen Talk sexual health curricula to 5th through 12th grade students in public schools, private schools, community programs, and juvenile detention facilities, primarily in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Formulate course specific lesson plans, consistent with Health Connected’s sexual health curricula that are age and culturally appropriate to the priority population.
  • Effectively present all course specific curricula in classrooms and online, as needed, to students with diverse learning needs.
  • Collect and compile data on students participating in Health Connected’s courses.
  • Transfer data from various formats into appropriate Health Connected’s online database systems.
  • Uphold positive and professional partnerships with teachers, school administrators, and other professionals.
  • Participate in local school/community health fairs, forums, conferences and/or Health Connected’s provider

trainings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree or 2 years of experience in related field. Background in health education, or related coursework, strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with students in special education classes a plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of reproductive and sexual health topics.
  • Ability to work independently and be flexible with one’s weekly schedule.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint), Prezi, Google suite (Docs, Sheets, Sites), video conferencing platforms (Zoom) and capacity/willingness to learn new software/technology quickly.
  • Must be available to work during school hours (8:00-3:00)
  • Holds a valid driver’s license, access to reliable transportation and willing to travel locally.

Skills of a Successful Health Education Specialist

  • Experience working with youth from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, especially in groups.
  • Ability and comfort discussing sensitive and difficult sexual health conversations in an approachable, non- judgmental/culturally humble manner with student and adult populations.
  • Effective and adaptable written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge or background in health equity or reproductive justice topics.
  • Classroom management and group facilitation talent.
  • Excellent organizational management abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proven self-starter who exhibits a strong sense of teamwork and is committed to program improvement.

Employment Type/Schedule: Entry Level Position. Full-Time (35 hours/week), non-exempt.

Benefits: Eligible for paid time off, health/dental insurance, and retirement plan. Mileage reimbursement available. Professional development opportunities also available. Salary Range: $21.00-$23.00 per hour
