Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000

Position Overview

The program manager leads a team of professionals providing out-sourced financial services to diverse and compelling nonprofit organizations, generally in Washington or Oregon. Services include bookkeeping, accounting, tax, and financial management consultation. 

Your passion for working with people and advancing important causes will be fulfilled in this staff and client-focused role. A successful leader will draw on technically sharp financial skills and strong attention to detail but will also bring a big-picture understanding of nonprofit organizations.

The Financial Services team includes 7-9 highly skilled, passionate, and committed accountants and contractors. As the lead for the Financial Services team, the Program Manager supports staff, guides the program’s development, and ensures that our services help our nonprofit partners succeed so that all people and communities can flourish.

Essential Functions

Team Support and Supervision (40%)

Supervises and supports the Financial Services team of accounting professionals working on-site or remotely so organizational and program goals and targets are met: 

  • Recruits a diverse staff that reflects the diversity of our community
  • Onboards, trains, and supports staff to deliver high-quality services to nonprofit partners 
  • Identifies and takes action to improve processes
  • Guides performance, ensuring that operating procedures are followed and performance standards are met
  • Empowers the team to share resources, support each other and clients, solve problems, and recognize accomplishments
  • Incorporates skilled volunteers into client engagements as appropriate

Program Management (40%)

Manages client engagements in partnership with the Financial Services staff, so we have enduring relationships with the nonprofits we serve:

  • Develops program budget and goals; monitors progress so that financial performance is strong and feedback from clients is positive
  • Implements program policies, practices, and pricing that ensure program sustainability 
  • Conducts intake calls for prospective client engagements; develops the scope of work, deliverables, timeline, and cost 
  • Identifies and assigns appropriate staff to execute the project and arranges backup coverage 
  • Provides support and guidance to nonprofits regarding accounting and finance functions, procedures for internal controls, processes, and reporting
  • Monitors services to ensure financial work is accurate, timely, and consistent with best practices
  • Maintains process documentation in our Salesforce database to manage action items for engagements, meet client needs, assure appropriate billing, and support robust reporting
  • Routinely gathers feedback from clients and addresses concerns in a proactive manner
  • Participates in finance consulting with client organizations as needed
  • Actively supports the mission of 501 Commons by identifying client needs beyond financial services and collaborating within 501 Commons to refer other services 

Standards Management (10%)

Maintain general knowledge of important accounting standards updates as well as changes to laws in the external environment that affect accounting and bookkeeping work

  • Stay up to date on changes to accounting practices from sources such as the AICPA
  • Stay up to date on federal, state, and local laws that have implications for financial services 
  • Regularly update the Financial Services team and clients on important changes to accounting practices and taxes, so all parties are aware of the implications for recordkeeping and other practices
  • Ensure that staff have adequate training and operating procedures are updated and followed to manage risk to 501 Commons and clients

Special Projects Management (10%)

Manages client intake and scoping and consults on high-level financial projects 

  • Assesses client need, timeline, and any required special skills 
  • Assembles project team based on knowledge of client and skills required. Team members may come from Financial Services staff or other 501 Commons team members or volunteers
  • Executes project goals, sets milestones, and ensures deliverables and outcomes are met

Qualifications

The program manager must be able to perform each responsibility satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Evidence of the individual’s ability to be successful in this position would include the following:

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years in a management role that included financial management responsibilities 
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience, preferably for teams of 4+
  • Knowledge of and passion for GAAP accounting principles and financial management, including budgeting, internal controls, and compliance 
  • At least one year of work in the nonprofit sector or with nonprofit clients and a solid understanding of nonprofit accounting requirements 
  • The ability to travel within King County

Desired Qualifications

  • CPA, CMA, EA, or other credentials
  • Experience in a customer service or a consulting practice
  • Background working and/or living within diverse communities  
  • Familiarity with Salesforce
