ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Mission: Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) provides affordable housing and services for low-income people in the Tenderloin and throughout San Francisco, to promote equitable access to opportunity and resources.

 

Established in 1981, TNDC has grown to employ more than 450 staff, to develop, own, manage and provide supportive services in 43 properties that offer deeply affordable housing for nearly 5,800 tenants, and to expand its work in community organizing and afterschool programming. TNDC is viewed as a trusted and well-organized community ally locally and a practice leader nationally. In San Francisco, TNDC envisions diverse communities where people with low incomes can fulfill their potential and meet their basic needs. In the Tenderloin, TNDC stands as a catalyst for advancing community interests and a force for expanding the choices that enhance livability, such as housing, employment, education, food, cultural activities, and open spaces.

SUMMARY

The Director of Fund Development oversees the department of Fund Development, its staff, and all of it activities. The department, with a current staff of 7, is responsible for cultivating and managing institutional, corporate, and individual donors, through grant writing and reporting, direct mail, major and planned gift solicitations, and several large-scale signature special events.  The Fund Development department is currently responsible for raising between $3 and $3.5 million per year.  The department is also responsible for TNDC’s branding, messaging, media relations, and overall external communications.  The department also oversees TNDC’s volunteer and corporate engagement programs.  The Director of Fund Development is also a member of TNDC’s Senior Management Team and works in this team setting to provide leadership and guidance to the organization.  This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer and is also the key departmental liaison to the Board’s fundraising committee. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES                    

  • Develop and oversee implementation of TNDC’s overall fundraising strategy.
  • Develop department’s annual budget and workplan, and ensure appropriate systems are in place to monitor progress and forecast results.
  • Hire and supervise department managers, including the Major and Planning Giving Manager, the Corporate and Foundation Relations Manager and the Communications Manager.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors, board of directors, and key institutional contributors, working closely and in coordination with the CEO.
  • Ensure the infrastructure is in place and maintained to record and report on gifts in Raisers Edge, and support effective interface with the Accounting department.
  • Create a strong team culture within the department and in cross departmental relationships.
  • Oversee TNDC’s external branding, messaging, and communications and work with the COO and CEO to prepare key communications to staff and stakeholders, respond to media inquiries, and manage crisis communications.
  • Oversee the continual improvement and maintenance of TNDC’s website.
  • Provide organizational leadership as a member of TNDC’s Senior Management Team.
  • Collaborate with department heads to identify fundraising opportunities and needs and to pursue funding opportunities.
  • Serve as key staff to the Board’s Fund Development Committee, and work to engage all board members to support fund development activities.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Ability to lead and motivate the Fund Development department and assist the Chief Operating Officer and members of the Board of Directors in successfully pursuing financial support for the organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including competency with Microsoft Office applications and with the Windows environment; familiarity with the use of internet, including use of search engines; prior experience with either Raiser’s Edge or Microsoft Access databases, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of and some experience in all phases of fundraising (major gifts, events, grants, direct mail, etc.)
  • Ability to work within a very diverse workplace; and to relate to a broad spectrum of people outside of TNDC.
  • Confidentiality required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years of experience as a professional nonprofit fundraiser.
  • B.A. degree or equivalent experience
  • 2 years of experience supervising staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Knowledge of affordable housing and community development.
  • Former experience in the Tenderloin neighborhood, or in San Francisco.
