ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Network Engineer in the Information Technology Department of the ACLU's National office in New York, NY.

The Information Technology (IT) department provides technology-based services and support for a more than 550-person National staff at our New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, the Dakotas, Puerto Rico and Durham offices, including staff based in remote locations. ACLU IT support staff ensures that business critical services are available to all staff.

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the Network Engineer will be a technical and experienced person possessing network administrator skills to provide expertise in managing, supporting, upgrading and proactively monitoring of network and server infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with Cisco voice, data and wireless equipment as well as Microsoft and Linux systems. Additionally, the successful candidate will support user needs by providing advice and support in establishing connectivity and assist in troubleshooting problems related to connectivity and performance. The candidate should be self-motivated, working independently and be a strong team player, providing solutions and problem solving/troubleshooting needs for all environments. The candidate will have the ability to multi-task in a dynamic paced environment while being assigned to projects including application development support, network configuration, performance monitoring, problem resolution, upgrade efforts as well as to provide support for 24/7 production environments, test environments and office environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Configure, manage and maintain all essential network devices
  • Troubleshoot network problems
  • Identify benefits and drawbacks of existing network configurations for network improvements
  • Implement network security, standards, and protocols
  • Configure devices such as switches and routers
  • Provide Tier 3 support to HelpDesk team when needed
  • Conduct costs/benefit analysis and provide specific detailed information for hardware and software selections
  • Conduct testing of network design
  • Responsible for monitoring network and server hardware to ensure maximum uptime
  • Recommend, schedule and perform network improvements, upgrades and repairs
  • Establish governing principles for network design and deployment
  • Provide the technical knowledge and support sharing techniques to the IT department
  • Research and recommend new technologies to assist in capacity planning

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated experience with TCP/IP stack and its internals as well as related troubleshooting tools (connectivity verification, packet capture etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with major router platforms; specifically with Cisco 37xx, 39xx, 45xx, 49xx, ASR, & Nexus devices including all compatible supervisory and line cards for these platforms
  • Demonstrated experience with networking hardware platforms such as routers, switches and firewalls in a large enterprise environment
  • Demonstrated experience with enterprise wireless networking in a large environment
  • Demonstrated experience with routing and switching protocols such as OSPF, BGP and STP in a large enterprise environment
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team
  • Experience working with carriers to provision, install, and operate data networks
  • Experience with enterprise 802.11 wireless networking
  • Strong customer focus, ownership, urgency and drive
  • A solid understanding of security fundamentals and secure networks
  • Experience administering Office 365
  • Experience using a help desk ticketing system like ZenDesk
  • Background of working autonomously for multiple clients in multiple environments, providing technical support to end users
  • Excellent organizational skills, including maintenance and design of policies and procedures including forms, call tickets and client service records

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years of Network administration experience
  • 5+ years experience with Microsoft Server 2012 R2/2016
  • 5+ years experience with administrating Microsoft Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Prior experience with SIP/VoIP a plus
  • CCNA/CCNP certifications a plus
  • Experience with VMware or Nutanix server builds is also preferred
