The goal of the national paid leave campaign of the National Partnership for Women & Families is to win a national paid family and medical leave law in the next three to five years, building on federal momentum, state-level victories and private-sector advances that have distinguished the organization’s and the paid leave movement’s work over the last few years. A national paid leave policy will substantially improve the lives of 100 million+ working people in the United States who do not have paid family and medical leave now – especially women of color, women who are paid low wages, people with disabilities and their family caregivers, who are often disproportionately forced to make difficult choices because of their inability to access paid leave. A national paid leave plan should guarantee all working people time to care without suffering financial devastation when a new child arrives or a personal or family member’s serious illness or injury strikes. This victory will help change our country’s culture to recognize the value and dignity of care, promote gender and economic equity, strengthen the U.S. economy and advance U.S. competitiveness in the world.
We seek a creative, passionate communications director to help create a cohesive public narrative about the urgent need for paid leave that penetrates in national and regional press and online. This is a great position for a senior-level communications professional with a passion for gender, race and economic equity, a can-do attitude and a desire to be part of a dynamic, collaborative team that works closely with external partners in government, advocacy, business and the media to advance a national policy goal. The communications director will develop and oversee a broad range of communications and public relations activities to advance the campaign for national paid family and medical leave, including drawing on the voices, expertise and value of the National Partnership and its coalition partners, outside influencers and policymakers. The person in this position will work jointly with the campaign’s director and under the supervision of the vice president for workplace policies and strategies and the National Partnership’s communications vice president in developing and executing the campaign’s communications plan. The communications director will manage a mid-level communications staffer to help accomplish the campaign’s communications goals.
- Pitches National Partnership and our allies to media outlets across the country, media influencers, digital media outlets, podcast producers and others to advance national paid leave.
- Coordinates with advocacy partners’ communications staff and develops new strategies to advance a national narrative of a country in which paid leave is a reality.
- Develops appropriate messaging, creates and oversees the creation of communications materials to support the paid leave campaign (including media outreach materials such as media advisories, news releases, editorial board memos, etc.) and creates press materials to support reports and briefs.
- Creates communications materials for use by policymakers, advocacy partners and private sector allies, including toolkits for mass use as well as customized products that help to further the campaign’s strategic objectives.
- Identifies strategic rapid response opportunities for the campaign and national, state or local allies and – when needed – helps coordinate rapid response among advocacy partners.
- Develops and manages the execution of campaign communications plans for key moments, such as hearings, briefings, advocacy days, report releases, etc. and produces collateral materials to help partners amplify these moments.
- Maintains and grows the campaign’s digital presence, including the SupportPaidLeave.org website, Medium’s Support Paid Leave and Voices for Paid Leave publications, the I’m for Paid Leave Facebook page and other channels.
- Develops and oversees development of email communications for advocacy partners and the public related to the campaign.
- Reviews, edits and oversees the production and design of high-impact policy reports and materials, including contracting with vendors for production of reports as needed.
- Ensures campaign-related clips are monitored and shared internally and externally.
Qualifications and Attributes
- Strong writer, editor and communicator with eight or more years of progressively responsible experience advancing advocacy, legislative or political objectives through traditional and social media campaigns.
- Experience developing (or playing a leading role in developing) communications plans for a campaign to advance federal legislation from an advocacy perspective, including using data, storytelling and political angles to convey momentum and the need for legislative action.
- Strong relationships with top-tier national and regional reporters and editors, television producers, digital media innovators, podcast hosts and other traditional and digital media leaders.
- Experience coordinating with communicators and policy staff at other organizations to help a coalition or community of groups stay aligned and on message as well as with creating materials a coalition or community needs to be effective.
- Understanding of the role communications plays in the legislative process, ideally including experience working with communications teams that serve policymakers.
- Record of success pitching and placing high-impact broadcast, radio, print and digital stories that contain desired framing and messaging.
- Demonstrated passion for producing and editing clear, impactful and high-quality written products related to domestic policy issues, ideally with a focus on working families, women, economic, racial and social justice and equity, labor or tax and budget policies.
- Graphic design experience is desirable.
- Experience working in racially diverse teams, and creating equitable and inclusive environments, with an ability to build strong, trusting relationships that include seeking and adapting to perspectives from all members of your team.
- Demonstrated skill and comfort managing mid- and junior-level staff and pride in fostering respectful team dynamics.
- Ability and willingness to interact with the press at local events and occasionally to travel.
- This position is based in Washington, D.C.
The salary range for this position is $110,000-125,000, with exact salary depending on experience and new staff rarely starting at the top of the range. The National Partnership provides a generous benefits package.
