Organization Overview

Pine Tree Legal Assistance is Maine’s oldest and largest civil legal aid provider. We believe that there should be fairness, justice, and equality for all, and, that if we can instill more fairness in our society, there will be less poverty. Our mission is to ensure that state and federal laws affecting poor people are upheld, while also addressing the systemic barriers to justice faced by Mainers with low incomes. To achieve our mission, we provide free civil legal assistance in cases where it can make a difference in one’s ability to meet one’s basic human needs or in enforcing one’s basic human rights. Position Overview

Pine Tree is seeking a full-time attorney to join our Kids Legal Unit, which has been in operation since 2004 to provide focused attention to the legal needs of low-income children and youth, especially in education-related matters. The attorney will primarily participate in development of appropriate individualized education plans for low-income clients, as well as handle suspension/expulsion or related proceedings, typically at the administrative level.  Past Kids Legal work has also addressed discrimination against BIPOC and LGBTQ students in the school setting. As resources permit and the needs of the client community require, the attorney may also handle litigation in other areas of law (including emancipation, housing, or benefits issues) in State or Federal court. The attorney provides supervision support for the work of the Kids Legal paralegal (both in the provision of limited legal assistance and in other work specific to the attorney’s caseload) and, as needed, supports volunteer attorneys who have agreed to provide representation in these matters. The attorney is also responsible for community engagement and networking to strengthen Kids Legal and Pine Tree’s reputation and access to legal services by eligible individuals, consistent with other work and time commitments. These activities include development or updating of written client education materials for www.kidslegal.org, the provision of outreach and/or trainings to staff, community agencies and other groups on the legal needs of this client population, and work on collaborations or other initiatives designed to increase access to justice for these clients. Specific decisions about how to prioritize between these time commitments are made in consultation with other colleagues and the attorney supervisor. A copy of the full job description is available upon request.

Required Education and Experience

Significant prior experience with education advocacy is required (including familiarity with IEPs, school suspension and discipline proceedings). Prior experience with enrollment issues related to homeless students is preferred.
