The Encampment for Citizenship (EFC) is hiring a summer program Wellness, Recreation and Residence Coordinator. EFC offers a residential summer leadership program for youth ages 15-18. Young people from diverse ethnic, economic, social, religious and geographic backgrounds participate in the 3-week program. In 2020, the Encampment summer program will be held at the Cate School, Carpenteria, CA, July 1-22. The curriculum will focus on Social Justice in Action — we will be looking at the many ways to work for social justice by learning from the different organizations, leaders and initiatives in the surrounding communities. Topics will include climate justice, immigration, voting rights and legislative change.

Position Overview

Ideal candidate must have strong background in wellness and recreation and ability to create workshops about wellness, as well as, good organizational skills; be flexible; able to work with young people in a range of situations, including conflicts that can be stressful and emotionally charged; have good boundaries; strong leadership abilities and ability to work as part of team. This is a seasonal position that includes monthly phone meetings beginning in February and increases to full-time for the 3-week summer program, including 4-day staff training in late June. The Wellness, Recreation and Residence Coordinator (WRRC) will work with the Program Director to integrate wellness and recreation into the curriculum and implement during summer program. During the summer program, the WRRC will provide supervision and assistance to the Fellows. The WRRC will facilitate large group workshops on wellness and self-care as a part of being a successful advocate for social justice. The WRRC will help to ensure positive atmosphere and health and safety of participants, including making sure they are where they are supposed to be at meal times and at night. The WRRC will live on site and share responsibility for youth 7 days a week, 24 hours/day (all staff members will have time off within this framework). Qualifications:

§ Four years’ experience with teaching and working with youth in experiential education, including critical thinking and empowerment modalities

§ Extensive experience in the field of wellness and recreation

§ Prior experience in developing wellness workshops

§ Bi- lingual in Spanish is helpful but not required

  • CPR/first aid training preferred
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must have clean driving record from DMV
