Who We Are: Senior and Disability Action (SDA) is a citywide nonprofit organization. We mobilize and educate seniors and people with disabilities to fight for individual rights and social justice. Through individual support and collective action, we work together to create a city and world in which seniors and people with disabilities can live well and safely. SDA has six programs, which include education and empowerment classes, computer training, and community organizing and advocacy in health care, home care, and housing.

The Opportunity: 

The Housing Organizing Director brings together seniors and people with disabilities to advocate for deeply affordable and accessible housing, prevent displacement, and build the senior and disability movement. The Director coordinates the SDA Housing Collaborative and takes part in tenant rights and housing coalitions. 

This position includes conducting outreach, recruiting members, meeting with members one on one to develop leadership, working on policy, participating in housing coalitions, and planning and implementing actions and campaigns with members. The Housing Organizing Director will collaborate with one other Housing Organizer. This person will also build and grow SDA as a whole, support one’s co-workers, and take on a variety of tasks as needed.

The ideal candidate is passionate about community organizing with senior and disability communities. The person will be flexible, confident in one’s beliefs but open to hearing those of others, good at working with people, and comfortable learning on the job. 


Key job responsibilities:

  • Work with SDA members to plan and implement organizing campaigns on deeply affordable housing in collaboration with other housing advocates, community leaders and agencies.
  • Plan and coordinate monthly SDA Housing Collaborative meetings.
  • Conduct outreach in person and through social media to recruit members, meet with people one on one, and support leadership development.
  • Follow local and state housing policy, and work towards organizational annual advocacy agenda.
  • Participate in housing coalitions such as San Francisco’s Anti-Displacement Coalition and Coalition of Community Housing Organizations, and work jointly on housing projects and campaigns.
  • Regularly report on contract deliverables.


Other tasks include:

  • Create and distribute materials to help inform seniors and people with disabilities of housing rights and available housing options.
  • Work with the Housing Organizer to improve living conditions for people living in SRO hotels.
  • Work with Housing Rights Committee on subcontract for housing counseling.
  • Hold Senior and Disability University classes in different neighborhoods and in different languages to educate people about housing and bring in more people.
  • Support SDA’s organizational projects, including monthly General Meetings, newsletters, fundraisers, administrative and communications work, etc.

Requirements for this position:

  • Experience or strong interest in community organizing or labor organizing, including experience with one-on-ones and leadership development.
  • Commitment to social justice, racial justice, and SDA’s mission and values.
  • Commitment to senior and disability rights.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide variety of people, including identifying and building diverse skills and talents.
  • Commitment to being scent-free and supporting an accessible environment.

Not required but advantageous:

  • Bilingual in English and either Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Russian.
  • Experience with Latino, Chinese, or African-American communities.
  • Experience in the disability and/or senior community.

Compensation starts at $57,000. Benefits include paid sick time, vacation, personal days, health care, a retirement plan, and access to dependent health coverage and a transit program. SDA staff are members of OPEIU Local 29.


The job will temporarily be partially remote and will include some regular time in the SDA office in San Francisco and other in-person locations. We will return to the office full time when it is deemed safe.
