This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – Community Change and Community Change Action operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.

Position Description:

The Housing Trust Fund Project is seeking an organizer to build statewide networks of residents of affordable housing and to work on all aspects of providing information and technical assistance to organizations working to create and implement city, county or state housing trust funds, and advance other housing policies that increase access to homes for all.

This is a one-year flex position. 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Housing Trust Fund Project team to build statewide networks of residents of affordable housing and housing and service partners in targeted states.
  • Identify and establish relationships with organizations working to create and implement housing trust funds, increase tenant protections, and advance other policies that increase access to homes for all.
  • Serve as technical assistance staff to housing trust fund and other housing policy campaigns, assisting them in all phases of creating and implementing the housing policy.
  • Train, educate and provide technical assistance to partner organizations on organizing tools in order to enhance and build capacity within housing trust fund and other housing justice campaigns.
  • Conduct research and prepare written materials, as necessary, on a wide range of issues related to housing trust funds, tenant protections, and other housing policies that increase access to home for all.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with national organizations advancing housing justice and ending homelessness.
  • Assist and coordinate with other Community Change staff on housing-related issues and campaigns, as well as on other Community Change campaigns and initiatives.
  • Maintain and bolster the Housing Trust Fund information and capacity of our website Housing Trust Funds

Preferred qualifications:

  • Minimum of five-seven years of experience in community organizing, electoral, labor or immigrant rights organizing and work leading policy campaigns at the local, state or national level on poverty issues. A mix of experiences in these arenas is ideal.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational assessment and development; ability to provide significant help in organizational and coalition development.
  • Familiarity with and openness to different approaches to grassroots organizing and policy work.
  • Experience providing community organizing training and assistance to community-based organizations.
  • Familiarity with current housing issues and federal, state and local programs
  • Involvement and/or responsibility for a state or local housing policy campaign
  • Strong facilitation, training and coalition building skills.
  • Ability to speak a second language is a plus. 
  • Financial expertise and budget management.
  • Ability to work democratically and effectively with diverse groups and people.
  • Willing to work long, flexible hours and to travel extensively.
  • Experience and comfort working as part of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team and the know how to combine assets available to the team in a way that maximizes ability of the team to function at a high level.
  • Strong team player; familiar with team dynamics and willing to work in a team environment.
  • Strong commitment to racial and gender justice and social change.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience communicating technical information
  • The ability to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment 
  • Experience with public policy and advocacy, including campaigns to influence policy at the city, county, state or federal level.
  • Strong computer and internet research skills. Proficiency using M/S Outlook, SLACK and Google Drive.
  • Commitment to Community Change’s mission to build the power and capacity of low-income people, especially low-income people of color and women, to lead powerful and dynamic movements for social change. 
  • Knowledge of key issues that Community Change currently works on, such as immigration reform, child care, and/or other economic justice issues.

This position reports to: Director of the Housing Trust Fund Project

Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in Community Change’s bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Travel Requirements: 20%-40% of the time (post pandemic).

Salary & Benefits: $70,000 – $85,000 annual salary. Community Change also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8% employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment (and 3% employer contribution for the first 6 months); and a choice of generous health insurance plans.
