Position Summary

OYC seeks dynamic, organized choral instructors for elementary choirs after school Monday-Friday and in-school teachers for the 18-19 school year. (combination of in-school and after-school programming). You love using music to build community, affirm students' cultural identities, and empower beginning musicians. Part-time hourly and full time salaried positions considered.


You will partner closely with students, on-site school personnel, and OYC staff, teaching the general/vocal and choral music to elementary children programs at multiple Oakland, Richmond, Berkeley, and Alameda sites. Lessons connect with world cultures, focus on musical skills development, and support student learning across disciplines. We seek teachers with strong vocal training and creative music backgrounds. You have a passion for working in affirming arts programming with young people.


Job duties

  • Teach general and choral music within OYC's multicultural model to elementary-aged school children in alignment with CA Music Standards and OYC benchmarks
  • Attend regular staff meetings and trainings as required
  • Form relationships with Principals, parents and students through participation in on-site performances and events
  • Prepare students for OYC concerts and events
  • Conduct on December, March and May OYC concerts, and supervise elementary children during performance
  • Administer and facilitate evaluation tools, t shirts, OYC information, and advocacy efforts as part of OYC initiatives
  • Complete time sheets and other administrative paperwork in a timely fashion


Needed Qualifications

➢ Proven ability to teach K-6th grade children in large group settings (10-25 students)

➢ Knowledge and appreciation of music from a variety of cultures

➢ Strong classroom management and student engagement in various settings

➢ Dedication to working with diverse students.

➢ Real passion for OYC's mission and the services we provide.

➢ Reliable transportation to school sites.

➢ Pass OUSD IA requirements, negative TB test and OYC background check (if under 40 college credits completed, contact us about IA options)


Preferred Qualifications

➢ Bilingual in Spanish and/or Mandarin highly desired

➢ Certification in Kodaly, Orff and/or other music education methodologies preferred, willing to incorporate them with OYC training necessary.
