About You:

The Special Education (IEP) Coordinator is passionate about supporting the students who are at-risk for academic underperformance due to emotional and/or physical challenges so that they can succeed in the school’s rigorous academic program. The Special Education (IEP) Coordinator holds primary responsibility for coordinating with the Committee on Special Education and other DOE providers to ensure that all students who qualify for special education services are served in a timely manner and set up for success. The Special Education Coordinator reports to the Student Support Services department head.

The specific areas of responsibility include:

  • Teaching
  • Serve as the learning specialist for 3 sections of co-taught middle school Math, Science, ELA or Humanities
  • Lead an advisory and tutorial

  • Ensuring IEP compliance
  • Coordinating with DOE providers to ensure that high quality related service providers are retained and scheduled to meet student needs
  • Developing systems to communicate the essential content of IEPs to the teaching faculty and to communicate updates throughout the year
  • Coordinating with the operations team to ensure that all students receive their required testing accommodations
  • Working with families to create transition goals for all students aged 14+

  • Coordination of all IEP meetings 6-8
  • Creating a schedule and handling all communications and logistics for annual reviews, triennial reviews, initial evaluations and requested reevaluations
  • Management of 504 plans
  • Communicating to families about 504 policies, coordinating 504 approvals and ensuring that 504 accommodations are honored
  • Maintenance of internal documents
  • Maintaining an accurate IEP and testing accommodations list to ensure that student schedules align to the program outlined in their IEP or 504 plans
  • Ensuring that “student scoops” are updated as annual reviews take place so that the faculty have up to date information about the students they serve
  • Performing and documenting FBA/BIPs as needed

  • Training and Supervision of Paraprofessionals
  • Leading the hiring process for paraprofessionals and providing onboarding training
  • Meeting with paraprofessionals for a bi-weekly coaching cycle to problem solve and give feedback

  • Billing and budgeting
  • Coordinating closely with the Finance Office to ensure that services for students with disabilities are recorded accurately

  • Response to Intervention
  • Coordinating with the Youth Development and School Culture department head and Student Support Services department head to ensure that the school’s RtI is implemented faithfully
  • Running Child Study Team meetings as needed to support student success

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education preferred
  • Certification in Special Education required
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting
  • Experience in the IEP coordinator role or with the CSE desired
  • Valid State Certification is helpful but not required
