Description

Brooklyn Legal Services seeks a staff attorney for its Veterans Justice Project.

The VJP helps veterans, active duty service members and their families to avoid evictions and foreclosures, combat student loan debt, address family law matters and secure public benefits. Our project is a leader on policy issues around veterans’ housing and homelessness, veterans’ preferences and protections under New York State law, and the provision of comprehensive legal services to those who have served. The VJP staffs onsite legal clinics at local VA hospitals and partners with New York Law School’s Veterans Justice Clinic.

Brooklyn Legal Services provides high-quality, innovative representation to address the pressing legal needs of Brooklyn’s diverse low-income population. BLS focuses on the problems that have the greatest impact on our clients—preserving affordable and decent housing, maintaining income support, redressing abusive lending and consumer practices, promoting family stability, and advocating for the disabled.

Roles and Responsibilities

The staff attorney will be responsible for litigation, community outreach and education in Brooklyn. The work will involve staffing regular outreach clinics, developing expertise in veteran housing and benefits programs, coordinating pro bono initiatives, strengthening partnerships with community-based organizations and governmental entities, and representing veterans in various forums including but not limited to housing and family courts.
