Founded in 2008, RefuSHE provides shelter, education, case management, counseling, childcare, and vocational training to unaccompanied, separated, and orphaned refugee girls.


RefuSHE Inc. is a registered NGO in the United States with headquarters in Chicago. It serves as the parent organization of RefuSHE Kenya, a registered NGO in Kenya and the organization's site of operations.

In 2021, RefuSHE entered an exciting new phase as an organization. Recognizing the importance of local executive leadership, the organization’s CEO and CFO positions were moved to Kenya.


RefuSHE, Inc. in the US will remain the organization’s headquarters but will transition to become an investor and amplifier of RefuSHE Kenya and our leadership there. The US headquarters will be led under the new title of Managing Director and is charged with ensuring that resources are secured for the work while elevating our leadership in Kenya to the global stage. The organization is looking for a self-aware leader who is comfortable supporting and uplifting local leadership and has a nuanced understanding of global geopolitical dynamics.


The Opportunity

The new Managing Director is responsible for securing resources to ensure the organization’s long-term financial sustainability and health. They will work in partnership with the CEO of RefuSHE to ensure the organization's consistent achievement of its mission, strategic vision, and financial objectives. The new Managing Director will serve as the CEO’s trusted confidant, thought partner, and advisor as the CEO sets the strategic direction of the organization.


While RefuSHE’s CEO has overall organizational responsibility for the organization’s programs and oversees all operations based in Nairobi, Kenya, the Managing Director is responsible for the overall operations of RefuSHE's US Headquarters. They will provide oversight and support to US staff while working with the CEO to cultivate a culture of collaboration across RefuSHE’s global team.


Reporting to the US Board of Directors and partnering with RefuSHE’s CEO, the Managing Director’s key responsibilities for success include:


Investment & Resource Mobilization

  • Responsible for driving investment and resources to support the development and execution of RefuSHE’s core strategies and programs Achieve the organization's annual fundraising goals through managing and growing key donor relationships, partnerships, and funding from foundations, government agencies, corporations, and individuals; support RefuSHE’s CEO in maintaining strong and active relationships with donors and stakeholders
  • Work with Chief Investment & Resource Officer to develop, oversee, and implement a multi-channel funder engagement strategy in collaboration with the Communications and Development Teams to cultivate and advance mutually rewarding relationships and community progress
  • Provide the CEO and Boards with a critical perspective on donor trends and opportunities for partnerships


Organizational Compliance

  • Ensure that the U.S. and Kenyan Boards, and corresponding committees, remain updated on the organization's financial and operational health; in collaboration with the CEO and Finance Committee, develop the fiscal budget(s) for board approval
  • Work with the CEO, CFO, and the Senior Director of Finance & US Operations to ensure that all fiscal policies and procedures are followed in the U.S. and Kenya; ensure audits in the US and Kenya are properly completed and ensure donor regulatory compliance is met
  • Work with the Senior Director of Finance & US Operations in maintaining official records and documents, and ensuring compliance with international, federal, state, and local regulations


External Relations

  • Amplify RefuSHE’s work, the team in Kenya, and beneficiaries, through strong communications to donors and stakeholders; work to ensure donors and stakeholders feel connected and engaged with the team and our beneficiaries
  • As a visible representative of RefuSHE, actively publicize the accomplishments and activities of the organization and maintain strong and frequent communication with stakeholders to demonstrate donor impact on RefuSHE’s programs
  • Work with the Senior Director of Brand Strategy & External Relations to manage the organization’s overall communications and external relations strategy with a goal to maximize resource mobilization and investment from diverse sources including individuals, foundations, and government agencies 


Candidate Profile

The Managing Director (MD) should be a confident, respected, and valued leader and trailblazer, with deep nonprofit and business acumen.


The MD will embody RefuSHE’s values and mission to support and develop our beneficiaries as the leaders of tomorrow. An experienced, empathic leader, the MD will embrace being part of a hard-working, collaborative, spirited, and values-driven team, while fostering positive organizational culture and innovating to help expand RefuSHE’s brand and reach.


The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

  • Ability to set priorities decisively, delegate responsibilities, assure accountability, and allocate resources to ensure results
  • A tactical self-starter and executor; an engaging and supportive leader Strong appreciation for data and analysis along with a proven ability to use metrics to drive decisions and achieve objectives
  • Demonstrated understanding of how to run a financially-sound organization, a track record of inspiring others to achieve impact through creativity and teamwork, and a commitment to leveraging individual strengths to meet organizational goals
  • A high-energy, charismatic ‘Ambassador’ for RefuSHE; able to effectively articulate and convey RefuSHE’s mission and priorities to a range of constituents, including donors, partner organizations, beneficiaries, board members, and staff


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MA degree preferred in Social Sciences, International Development, Economics, or other relevant area
  • 6-10 years of global nonprofit management experience with increasing responsibility, including 3-4 years in an executive or management leadership role
  • 4-6 years of demonstrable experience prospecting, securing, and/or managing grants from institutional donors, foundations, and/or individuals Knowledge of global refugee issues and/or gender-based development and women and children’s rights
  • Strong financial and compliance acumen
  • Experience and comfort leading a remote organization; the organization is registered in Illinois, but the team lives/works all over the US
  • Sensitive to the requirements of working in a multinational and multicultural environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; confident and persuasive public speaker
  • Team-oriented, with a good sense of humor
  • Once safe, ability to travel 20-30% of the time; travel to Kenya at least once a year required
  • Must be US-based and eligible to work in the US


Expectations & Compensation

RefuSHE is registered in Illinois and retains its headquarters in Chicago. However, due to the remote nature of this work, US-based candidates outside the Chicago area will be considered.


Compensation

  • $90,000-$100,000 based on experience
  • RefuSHE offers a competitive benefits package, inclusive of flexible paid time off, medical (health, dental, vision) insurance, and 401(k)
