Urban Alliance (UA) is a national youth workforce development non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC with regional offices in Baltimore, MD; Chicago, IL; and Northern Virginia. In 2018, UA will expand its core youth employment model – the High School Internship Program (HSIP) – to Detroit, MI.

The HSIP provides economically disadvantaged high school seniors with year-long paid internships, comprehensive job readiness training, and mentorship to ensure post-high school connection to college, a career, or career-training pathway. UA’s goal is to give young people an expanded idea of what’s possible for their future through access to meaningful professional development and work experience. Since 1996, UA has connected nearly 4,000 youth to professional paid internships.

Urban Alliance is searching for a Program Manager to manage student interns and support work site mentors (interns’ supervisors). The Detroit Program Manager will oversee at least 35 youth annually, deliver weekly job readiness training, support students’ post-high school planning, and cultivate relationships with schools and employers. A successful candidate will be a dynamic self-starter with strong attention to detail and a passion for the Urban Alliance mission. This position will report directly to the Detroit Executive Director.


Program Management:

  • Monitor the professional and academic performance of at least 35 high school interns throughout the year-long internship experience.
  • Collaborate with the local Executive Director to meet annual recruitment goals, and execute student recruitment strategies (e.g., recruitment sessions at schools).
  • Cultivate positive relationships with students, mentors, parents, and school staff.
  • Support the local Executive Director with managing corporate, school, and nonprofit relationships.
  • Support the local Executive Director and National Communications Manager with program and volunteer events.
  • Represent UA at community events as needed.

Intern Support:

  • Organize, manage, and facilitate 5-6 weeks of job readiness training to a cohort of at least 35 interns prior to internship start dates, and lead continued professional development workshops once a week from November to July.
  • Troubleshoot and address any challenges that arise among the student cohort or with job partners.
  • Collaborate with interns to create post-high school plans; provide guidance on the college application process; and ensure each intern is connected to college, a career, or career-training pathway after the HSIP ends.

·        Conduct formal evaluations of intern job performance and skill development, and work one-on-one with all interns to develop a performance plan based on employer feedback.

·        Respond to time sensitive requests from interns outside of working hours.

Mentor & Jobsite Support:

  • Support job site mentors (interns’ supervisors) throughout the internship program and proactively identify and troubleshoot challenges.
  • Develop and facilitate mentor training.
  • Hold formal and informal check-ins with mentors to evaluate student performance.
  • Troubleshoot and mediate jobsite conflicts in a timely manner, and track jobsite relationships.

School Relationships and Intern Recruitment:

·        In collaboration with the Executive Director, cultivate strong, cooperative, and productive relationships with the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), including administrators, principals, counselors, and teachers.

·        Collaborate with guidance counselors and teachers at targeted high schools to identify and recruit appropriate students for UA’s HSIP, and track their academic performance throughout the year.

Data Management & Program Evaluation:

  • Input and track participant attendance and weekly case notes into Salesforce.
  • Work with the Executive Director and the national evaluation team to share data and respond promptly to data requests.



  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • At least two years of experience working with youth required.
  • Experienced working with underserved youth strongly preferred.
  • Experience implementing and facilitating a curriculum preferred.
  • Experience working with community organizations and schools in under-resourced areas preferred.

·        Experience with the college admissions process, local scholarships, and financial aid opportunities strongly preferred.

·        Excellent oral and written communication, including mediation skills and the ability to have direct and open conversations.

  • Proven ability to work independently and on a team under short deadlines.
  • Excellent MS Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and PowerPoint skills. Proficiency in Salesforce a plus.

·        High energy and passion for the Urban Alliance mission.

·        Excellent attention to detail and proven commitment to executing programmatic goals at a high standard.

  • Demonstrated understanding that working with youth requires flexibility.
