The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research and provides consulting services to justice innovators.
The Center’s National Technical Assistance department provides training and expert assistance to jurisdictions across the county to support the planning, implementation, and enhancement of innovative approaches to justice. The department’s work encompasses drug treatment courts, community courts, Native American/Alaska Native tribal courts, prosecutor-led diversion initiatives, procedural justice, pretrial supervision, and many more areas of justice system reform.
The National Technical Assistance department is seeking a Communications Specialist. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Technical Assistance, the Communications Specialist will help the department develop a wide range of products, including practitioner monographs, fact sheets, toolkits, newsletters, and other written materials on the cutting edge of justice system reform. In addition, the Communications Specialist will help the department enhance its online presence and communications strategy to the field. In all of these activities, the Communications Specialist will work in close coordination with the Center’s Communications Department to ensure that products and overall strategy are consistent with the Center’s overall approach and further the Center’s mission.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Write both technical and general audience publications related to the Center’s work in justice reform, including practitioner monographs, fact sheets, toolkits, newsletters, and other written materials;
· Edit written materials produced by Technical Assistance staff;
· Ensure content for the Center’s websites and other online platforms related to the work of the Technical Assistance department is up-to-date and create new content as necessary;
· Assist in the production of podcasts, videos, presentations, and other multimedia products;
· Advise the Technical Assistance department on communications strategy in coordination with the Communications Department, support the Technical Assistance Department’s social media presence, and help strengthen the department’s outreach to the field;
· Work in close coordination with the Director of Communications and other communications department staff to ensure that all products and strategies are consistent with the Center’s overall approach and further the Center’s mission;
· Synthesize notes and other work product from TA Department staff into finished reports;
· Prepare proposals for federal, state, local, and private funding;
· Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications: The Communications Specialist must have the ability to translate professional jargon into plain language, write clearly and quickly, and meet tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of writing experience. Experience with multi-media editing is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience writing about criminal justice issues. The Communications Specialist must be comfortable communicating with judges, attorneys, elected officials, and other justice system stakeholders. Occasional long-distance travel may be required.
