The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Kansas is a non-profit and non-partisan organization dedicated to preserving and advancing the civil rights and legal freedoms guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The ACLU of Kansas works in the state legislature, the courts, and local communities to protect the rights of all people living in Kansas. The organization’s work includes efforts to strengthen and defend First Amendment rights, voting rights, reproductive rights, racial justice, LGBT rights, immigrants’ rights, stopping government surveillance, and reforming the criminal justice system. The ACLU of Kansas often works in broad-based coalitions made up of individuals and organizations from across the political, partisan, and ideological spectrum. The ACLU of Kansas is an affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, has an annual budget of approximately $1 million, and has more than 30,000 supporters across the state. The headquarters of the ACLU of Kansas is in Overland Park, Kansas, with a field office located in Wichita, Kansas.


The ACLU of Kansas comprises two separate corporate entities, the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and the ACLU Foundation of Kansas. Both entities have the same overall mission, and share office space and employees. The ACLU has two separate corporate entities in order to do a broad range of work to protect civil liberties. The ACLU Foundation of Kansas is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that primarily engages in litigation and public education. The ACLU of Kansas is a 501(c)(4) non-profit corporation that primarily engages in lobbying and advocacy.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The ACLU of Kansas seeks a dynamic, creative, self-motivated team player with some experience and familiarity with digital communications and event planning to fill the position of Communications and Events Associate. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented professional to enter, gain experience, and play a significant role in advocacy-oriented communications.


The position may be based in either Overland Park, Kansas or Wichita, Kansas, and may involve occasional travel to other parts of the state. The Communications and Events Associate will report to the Director of Strategic Communications. 



PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the comprehensive organizational communications calendar.
  • Manage the media list and engagement with media contacts.
  • Monitor the media for opportunities to engage, tracking media placements.
  • Arrange press conferences.
  • Draft, edit, and review a wide range of documents and resources for use by the affiliate.
  • Draft, edit, and review copy for the organization’s websites.
  • Draft, edit, review, and design posts for the website – including images.
  • Draft, edit, review, and design social media content, including images.
  • Draft, edit, and review messages to the organization’s email subscriber list.
  • Perform day-to-day management of the organization’s social media channels (Facebook and Twitter).
  • Plan and implement video campaigns.
  • Design (or manage design by an external consultant) layouts of ACLU materials, including print and digital.
  • Manage the inventory and distribution of ACLU materials.
  • Take photos and video at ACLU events for use by the organization.
  • Identify opportunities for community outreach/tabling.
  • Identify opportunity for speaking engagements by ACLU staff, clients, and volunteers.
  • Organize the logistics for all major public events held by the affiliate (e.g., seminars, membership conferences).
  • Manage relationships with communications vendors.
  • Run reports and analytics related to communications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.



QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of one year of experience and demonstrated success in communications, event planning, graphic design or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, design, communications, public relations, marketing, English, or a related field. The degree requirement may be waived for candidates with more than three years of direct experience in the field.
  • Strong writing, editing, and analytical skills on a wide range of topics.
  • Proficiency with graphic design programs (e.g., Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe InDesign, or Canva) strongly preferred.
  • Writing and editing experience with a variety of print and online communications media.
  • Experience creating advocacy and/or membership materials including newsletters and content for member/activist e-mail alerts, blogs, and websites.
  • Experience with event planning.
  • Superb organization skills; detail-oriented with strong follow-through and the ability to meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Creative, results-oriented, self-starting, and willing to learn.
  • Strong task and time management skills.
  • Personally committed to civil liberties principles and advancing the ACLU’s mission.
  • Personally committed to diversity; values and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and socio-economic circumstance.
  • Ability to travel across the state, as necessary, and participate in occasional evening and weekend meetings.
