Salesian Missions is a faith-based international fundraising office that supports the work of the Salesian of Don Bosco in over 130 countries. Salesian priests and religious brothers and sisters are committed to providing technical vocational training, basic education, youth empowerment, and other social services to marginalized youth and families. Although motivated by Catholic social teaching, the Salesians serve all people regardless of religious, ethnic, gender, or other background.

The Salesian Missions Office for International Programs provides development and humanitarian assistance to Salesian missions overseas through its Development and Gifts In-Kind Divisions. Through funding from the U.S. government (USG) and private foundations, development projects focus on a range of sectors including education, livelihoods, gender equity, capacity-building, health, food security, and refugee protection.


JOB OVERVIEW

As a member of Salesian Missions’ Office for International Programs (SMOIP), the International Programs Associate (IPA) works under the direct and programmatic supervision of the Office’s Supervisor (SMOIP/D) in New Rochelle, NY.  

The International Programs Associate focuses on daily work activities to strengthen Salesian schools, orphanages, vocational training centers, and other projects underpinning efforts for street children and vulnerable youth.

The IPA actively contributes to the programmatic components embedded in SMOIP, splitting days of the week between (a) the Development Division and (b) the Gifts-in-Kind Division, including USAID Excess Property.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

1.      Development Support (40% of time):

  • Supports SMOIP’s Development Division and its Development Professionals in strategy and project development efforts;
  • Researches project funding opportunities from the U.S. Government or Private Foundations;
  • In collaboration with International Development Associates (IDA), develops concept notes, proposals and reports, including writing, editing, formatting and translating texts from Salesian missionaries overseas;
  • Maintains the Don Bosco Network project database; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned by SMOIP Supervisor.

2.      Gifts-in-Kind Support (60% of time): 

  • Assists with the solicitation, screening and placement of in-kind donations, including USAID Excess Property for Salesian schools, orphanages, and other works abroad;
  • Initiates the request for quotations from freight forwarders
  • Prepares donation shipping documents
  • Fulfills donor reporting requirements
  • Packing, Receiving, and Dispatching inbound and outbound shipments that pass through headquarters;
  • Maintains inventory records;
  • Supports USAID Ocean Freight Reimbursement/Limited Excess Property Program proposal
  • development efforts;
  • Prospects new giving partnerships
  • Assists in maintaining the gifts-in-kind data management system; and
  • Serves as backup to other Gifts-in-Kind team members during absences or peak workloads.

3.      Required Qualifications:

a.       B.A. in international relations or a related field.

b.      Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to see the big picture

c.       Strong organizational and time-management skills, including ability to manage multiple, competing priorities and projects.

d.      Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

e.       Good interpersonal, relationship management, and cross-cultural skills.

f.       Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required (up to 4 weeks annually once restrictions are lifted).

g.      Demonstrated competence in MS Office, G+ Suite, and teleconference applications.

h.     Excellent written and oral English required.

4.     Preferred Qualifications

a.       2-4 years of work experience in an administrative setting

b.      Salesforce and Fluxx Grantseeker systems experience strongly preferred.

c.       Proficiency in Spanish or French

d.      Experience with faith-based or internationally-focused nonprofits

e.       Prior overseas work or volunteer experience
