Safe & Sound (formerly the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center) is a children’s advocacy organization working to prevent child abuse and reduce its devastating impact on the child, their family, and our entire community.
We have been a pioneer in the field of child abuse prevention, working within San Francisco for more 40 years. Recently the organization has begun to expand its impact working throughout the state of California.
Child Abuse is a complex problem, but a preventable one. Our data-informed approach leverages three primary strategies: we empower children with knowledge and confidence; we support families providing resources and skills; we activate the community and the changemakers within it to create a thriving social safety net for children and their families.
The organization has an annual operating budget of approximately $8 million and is supported by approximately 60 staff, interns, and more than 80 volunteers. Safe & Sound’s headquarters is located in a historic firehouse in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, with a second office in the Bayview neighborhood.

The Senior Accountant (SA) will be an integral member of a five-person Administration team that includes the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Financial Controller (FC), Human Resources Manager (HR Manager), and Accountant. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for performing detailed financial accounting and reporting activities, along with providing support for management accounting activities at Safe & Sound, which sustains complex operations with diverse funding streams, including government grants, private grants and contributions, rental income, and program services fees.
o Prepare financial statements and related reports, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports, budgets, and variance analysis, in compliance with internal control procedures and other appropriate US GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
o Support month-end close procedures in an accurate and timely manner, including, but not limited to:
§ Preparing and recording monthly transactions and recurring journal entries;
§ Recording monthly activity from Development’s Raisers’ Edge feeders;
§ Recording monthly activity from property management reports;
§ Preparing balance sheet account roll-forwards and month-end reconciliations;
§ Account for fixed assets and investments in keeping with policies and guidelines.
§ Recording receivables and cash receipts from government contract invoicing.
§ Provide backup to the FC or Accountant for certain core financial accounting processes.
o Review journal entries prepared by the Accountant.
- Funding and Financial Management
o Support government contract invoicing process, along with assisting in the accounting for private grants, liaising with the Program and Development departments whenever necessary.
o Support the Admin team in the annual budgeting and planning processes.
- Building Management and Operations
o Ensure appropriate validity of tenant revenue and expenditure transactions in accordance with sublease and tenant agreement terms.
o Work collaboratively with external property management team to identify and resolve variances and questions.
- Compliance, Risk, and Controls
o Assist with audit preparation (including the financial statement audit, CCSF audit/self-assessment, and other reviews), tax filings (including the Form 990, Form 1099s, etc), and other compliance reporting requirements.
- May be required to assist with other projects or duties as assigned.

o Strong demonstrated knowledge of and ability to research and apply US GAAP and federal, state, and city regulations.
o Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, SUMIF, SUBTOTAL, Pivot Tables), comfortable with technology, and ability and desire to learn new software.
o Meticulous attention to detail.

o Accounting system implementation and improvement experience strongly preferred.
o Internal controls implementation and improvement experience strongly preferred.
o Nonprofit accounting and/or auditing experience, particularly with diverse funding streams, strongly preferred.
o Government grant accounting, reporting, and/or auditing experience strongly preferred.
o Payroll processing and/or auditing experience strongly preferred.
o Ability to have a flexible schedule, as extended working hours may be required during month-end and year-end.
