Legacy International seeks a detailed oriented person to join our team full-time as a Program Associate for TechGirls

TechGirls is a U.S. Department of State initiative and exchange program designed to inspire young women from 38 countries to pursue higher education and careers in technology through hands-on skills development. It is administered by Legacy International in partnership with Virginia Tech University’s Center for Enhancement of Engineering Diversity. 

In 2022 TechGirls is expanding beyond the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) and South-Central Asia and include the following regions and countries:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa (AF) – Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa & Zimbabwe
  • East Asia & Pacific (EAP) – Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Mongolia, Taiwan & Vietnam
  • Europe & Eurasia (EUR) – Albania, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro & Turkey
  • Western Hemisphere (WHA) – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Honduras & Suriname

 RESPONSIBILITIES

This is an entry level position requiring good organizational skills. Become part of a dynamic team empowering young women around the globe.

  • Set-up and manage the program as outlined in Legacy’s proposal including educational and cultural sites visits and logistics.
  • Evaluate youth applications.
  • Coordinate student communications - setting up systems for collection of forms and bio data.
  • Organize & format participant data for program customization.
  • Collect data and report monitoring and evaluation results. (Legacy to provide training.)
  • Serve as “Designated Officer” entering data for DS-2019s (to apply for visas) through the SEVIS under the auspices of the U.S. Dept of State. (Training provided.)
  • Arrange logistics for Washington, D.C. portions of programs.
  • Work closely with Legacy’s financial department on the budget and cash requests.
  • Oversee air ticket purchasing for U.S. teens working with AMEX Global Business Travel. 
  • Contribute to program storytelling - writing impact stories, blog and social media content.
  • Assist with DOS report writing pre- and post-program.

NOTE: During U.S. program delivery, the Program Associate travels with the group, serving as a mentor, trip leader, and process monitor. Candidates who are fully vaccinated against COVID or able and willing to do so will be considered.

Qualifications  

  • Professional experience in international exchange, or with youth programs in general.
  • Proven ability to establish work priorities, respond to unanticipated needs, work under pressure.
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to manage fiscal responsibilities related to the program.
  • Possess strength and endurance required to manage a travel program.
  • U.S. driver's license with a good driving record (to qualify for driving - at least 25 years old).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and strong social skills when interacting with others.
  • Possess passion for tech and gender empowerment.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Prior youth and international travel is a plus.

 Position Date - begins November 1, 2021

 Work Location: Candidates who live in or can relocate to one of two areas will be considered: 1) south central/southwestern Virginia OR 2) the Washington D.C. metro area. Candidates living within commuting distance of either Legacy’s Bedford office or our DC area office can work entirely from Legacy’s office or have the option of a hybrid job with some remote work from home.

 Essential Functions 

  1. Cognitive and communication abilities to set up and run large, complex events
  2. Auditory, visual and ambulatory ability to identify and appropriately respond to environmental and other hazards.
  3. Ability and stamina to maintain a 10 to 16-hour days with a group ranging in from 10-50.
  4. Ability to observe and assess participant behavior, enforce appropriate safety guidelines and emergency procedures, and provide guidance and discipline as needed.

Salary

At least USD 36,000Salary: $36,000 (starting rate; gross/pretax). Negotiable, based on experience.

  • Legacy’s Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) benefits begin 3 months after start of employment. This HRA provides tax-free monetary reimbursements for qualified medical expenses, up to $3000 per year, subject to the employee meeting all criteria for reimbursement.
  • Flexible Paid Leave Policy. For a full time (100%) employee, this comes to 224 hours (28 eight-hour days) per year, including vacation, holidays and sick days.
  • Full-time employees become eligible for up to twelve (12) weeks of paid family leave after twelve (12) months of employment; subject to specific limitations and eligibility.
