ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

Covenant House is the largest provider of youth homeless services and operates in 31 cities across the US, Canada, and Latin America. In February 2017, Covenant House Illinois (CHIL) opened its doors in Chicago to youth experiencing homelessness (ages 18-24). Each young person is welcomed into a safe, caring environment where they are assigned a case manager and given access to food, showers, laundry services, and beds to rest. In addition, through agreements with leading Chicago agencies, these young people have access to medical, mental health, substance abuse, and legal services on-site.

PRIMARY FUNCTION OF POSITION:  

In furtherance of our commitment to Child and Youth Protection (CYP) Covenant House has developed a robust structure within the Department of Child and Youth Protection. We are managing the Praesidium accreditation of the US sites, as well as 2 Canadian accreditations and the pursuit of accreditation in all 4 Latin American sites. The CYP team has built out a structure of reporting for incidents as well as ensuring that all sites utilize the ETO Incident Reporting platform as well as the Armatus Learning Management system. The Primary function of the Child and Youth Protection Coordinator for Latin America will be to further the work of the department and to develop projects related to training and resource development as well as incident data collection.  This individual will report to the Vice President of Child and Youth Protection and work with the team in upholding the highest standards of safety agency-wide. 

JOB DUTIES:

  • On a daily basis, support the Vice President of Child and Youth Protection in furthering the development and administration of the Child and Youth Protection system in the Latin American sites
  • Support Vice President of Child and Youth Protection in the further development and translation of new Child and Youth Protection policies, supplemental trainings, forms and resources for Latin American sites.
  • Work with Child and Youth Protection teammates to conduct the Youth Safety Survey in Latin America.  The survey reflects questions applicable agency-wide but will be developed further to include questions applicable by site.  Collect, analyze, translate and synthesize all regional survey data. The youth safety survey will be continually refined in order to meet policy changes and new developments in Child and Youth Protection.
  • Support the Vice President of Child and Youth Protection and the Latin American site staff in conducting a successful self-audit of each site per year.  
  • Responsible for supporting the Latin American sites in implementing the requirements of the unified child and youth protection system and ensuring compliance with the safety accreditation process.
  • Prepare and present to Latin America site staff on various topics through the year at retreats and meetings as necessary
  • Point of contact for critical incident investigations and for providing quality, timely, and effective investigatory assistance to Latin American Sites.  
  • Maintain regional confidential records of reported incidents and actions taken and interface with the involved personnel and leadership, ensuring they have access to all necessary information.
  • Work with CHI Latin America department, Casa/ La Alianza National Directors and committee of site staff in order to oversee the implementation of the Praesidium accreditation process at each Latin American site.
  • Develop, write, translate and review culturally sensitive policies, training materials, forms and resources which target areas of risk.  
  • Support the Vice President of Child and Youth Protection in other assigned projects    
  • Keep abreast of developments and understand the latest information on Child and Youth Protection, confidentiality, social work best practices, and other issues that impact the protection of children and youth analyzed in the context of Latin American culture.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong written, verbal, technological and interpersonal skills in both English and Spanish;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services, Social Work, or related field is required; Master’s preferred;
  • Experience working within a Latin American context
  • Knowledge of homeless youth services and programming preferred, but comparable youth services knowledge acceptable;
  • Ideal candidate will be a proactive self-starter who enjoys working in a dynamic and changing environment;
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, Google applications and have the ability to learn other web based applications and programs;
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with an understanding of prioritization of workload and a sense of urgency in performing tasks and executing deliverables;
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to multitask and independently prioritize;
  • Able to collect and organize data;
  • Able to travel both nationally and internationally as needed;
  • Able to interact effectively with senior management, board members, donors, and maintain utmost professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality;
