For almost 50 years, LAF has provided people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago with comprehensive free legal services to resolve non-criminal issues. Each year LAF’s more than 80 full-time attorneys and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions. Their work impacts about 55,000 people each year.
Position: LAF seeks a litigation paralegal for the Children and Families Practice Group.
Responsibilities: The paralegal will work with the staff of the Children and Families Practice Group. Under the supervision of LAF attorneys, the paralegal will follow up on domestic violence cases, including client and witness interviewing in both English and Spanish. The paralegal will take referrals from DV agencies, perform certain intake duties, and draft documents, including: letters to clients, basic pleadings, financial disclosure statements, and discovery requests and answers. The paralegal will also participate in trainings at social service and other community agencies on all of the above issues.
Qualifications: Applicants must have excellent oral and written skills. Spanish fluency required, as well as a demonstrated interest or experience working with victims of domestic violence or with vulnerable populations of people. A college degree (except for current internal applicants as specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement). The applicant’s personal background, experience, or professional background should reflect an ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations with clients, co-workers and the community we serve. Good organizational, information-gathering, and case management skills are essential. Familiarity with domestic violence and domestic relations preferred. Completion of Illinois domestic violence 40-hour training preferred, but not required. Ability to work collaboratively with others, and to draft documents including letters and basic pleadings is essential.
Salary: Determined by years of experience and provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
