Description: The Barnes Foundation is seeking a Membership Manager.  As a senior member of the Annual Giving team, the Membership Manager has primary responsibility for the growth and stewardship of the Barnes general membership program, which consists of 15,000 member households with five member levels and annual dues ranging from $75-$550. The Manager works collaboratively within Development and across the institution to create and promote strategies to acquire, retain, and engage current, prospective, and former members. A creative problem-solver, the Manager participates in the strategy, implementation, and reporting of department-wide fundraising initiatives and in institution-wide strategic initiatives. The Manager possesses the keen ability to regularly and accurately analyze and convey the overarching characteristics, successes, and areas for improvement within the program to colleagues in other departments and senior leadership.

 

 The Membership Manager reports directly to the Senior Director for Annual and Corporate Giving. The manager also works closely with the other managers in Development and has direct oversight of the Senior Coordinator for Membership and Programs as well as relationships with external vendors.

 

Established as an educational institution the Barnes Foundation carries out its mission by promoting appreciation of the arts and horticultural science, through the preservation, presentation, and interpretation of the collections of Albert C. and Laura L. Barnes.

 

Celebrated for its exceptional breadth, depth, and quality, the Barnes Foundation’s art collection includes works by some of the greatest European and American masters of impressionism, post-impressionist, and early modern art, as well as African sculpture, Pennsylvania German decorative arts, Native American textiles, metalwork, and more. The 12-acre Arboretum contains over 3,000 species of woody plants and trees.

 

The Foundation engages diverse audiences through its exceptional collections and related high-quality programs that reflect a broad range of periods and cultures and build on the founders’ innovative educational vision of transforming lives through the arts and horticulture. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

Stewardship

  • Works to ensure high quality member servicing at all touch points (on-site, web, telephone).
  • Utilizes special exhibitions, public programs and other Foundation activities to encourage member engagement, and works to properly promote, measure, and report on member involvement in these programs.
  • Develops and executes regular targeted communications across several channels to inform and encourage use of benefits, practice good stewardship, and promote the Barnes strategic initiatives. 
  • Develops a system of reporting to measure member engagement and its impact on renewal rates.

 

Marketing, acquisition, renewal and upgrade

  • Develops and executes integrated mail, on-line and telephone campaigns that acquire new members and donors. Manages relationships with outside vendors and consultants to ensure membership materials meet Barnes standards for content and quality. Annual projects include four to five mail acquisition campaigns and two email-only acquisition campaigns. 
  • Develops and executes five-part monthly renewal and upgrade solicitation email and mail series.
  • Measures the effectiveness of online communications as it relates to website purchases and usability.
  • Works with the Marketing and Communications team on the use of the in-bound web marketing tool Silverpop to ensure that potential members are identified and given compelling opportunities to join regularly through strategic membership promotions. 
  • Works with development staff on annual fund solicitations and upgrade campaigns.
  • Works with Circles Program Manager to identify general members that are possible prospects for upper level giving and membership.

 

Budgeting, Reporting, and Strategic Initiatives

  • Develops, executes, and defends an annual plan that focuses on maintaining or growing a strong and sustainable membership base and consistent net revenue from year to year. 
  • Creates annual membership budget and closely monitors revenues and expenses throughout the year. In concert with supervisor, maintains responsibility for meeting or exceeding budgeted expense and revenue goals.
  • Reports on health of membership program as it relates to giving trends, peer benchmarks and analysis of engagement initiatives, developing strategies for continual improvement.
  • Provides monthly performance reports and strategy updates to supervisor and other senior staff, tracking engagement, renewal, and acquisition that ultimately inform strategy and budgeting.

 

Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Works with the Business Systems Coordinator to ensure that member levels, benefits, and events are set up, easily accessible to members, and reported on in ACME (the Foundation’s ticketing system).
  • Works with other department managers to ensure that their staff are aware of membership procedures and benefits, and collaborate with Visitor Services managers to develop and make available ongoing membership resources and training opportunities for front lines staff, including the off-site ACME call center.
  • Works with the Prospect and Development Data Analyst to ensure that Raiser’s Edge database includes up to date acquisition and renewal appeal information for accurate tracking and reporting purposes.
  • Works closely with Shop, Visitor Services, and ACME Call Center in training, tracking and motivating membership sales and strategizing promotional efforts.
  • Works with Editorial and Design teams to produce and distribute in-house membership collateral and promotional materials. Also works with Editorial, Design, Grants, Major Gift, and Curatorial teams to ensure that all outsourced membership collateral (direct mail acquisition and renewal communications) are of the utmost quality, and include the proper supporter acknowledgements and art credits. 

 

Managerial Competencies

  • Demonstrates the ability to monitor, supervise and hold accountable all employees in the areas of attendance, completion of documentation, ADP and implementation of all company policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Supervises and meets regularly with all direct reports to review operational metrics and provide ongoing guidance; documents constructive feedback regarding job specific functions, responsibilities and competencies. 
  • Maintains written documentation of supervision for oversight and review by other parties as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain a stable, productive team environment through effective communication, staff appreciation and other activities that yield a high level of employee engagement to support and preserve the employee’s interest in working for The Barnes Foundation.

 

Skills and Knowledge:

 

  • 5 years’ experience in membership organization required, preferably within a museum or cultural organization
  • BA degree or strong knowledge of art history preferred
  • Database experience, preferably within a fundraising organization, required. Raiser’s Edge experience preferred
  • Intermediate to advanced level of knowledge in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of corporate and premier individual giving programs a plus
  • Direct management experience preferred
