Program Purpose

Opportunity Neighborhood (ON) Mount Vernon is a community-wide effort where residents, schools, Fairfax County government, and community organizations work together with faith communities to bring positive change to a community. The ON Mount Vernon Community Organizer identifies and fosters grassroots leadership, recruits local volunteers, and conducts neighborhood meetings.

Opportunity Neighborhood Mount Vernon serves the community in the following focal areas:

1) Family and community engagement,

2) Youth connections,

3) Early childhood education,

4) Family wellness & stability, and

5) Career readiness.

This work is a collaborative effort of United Community staff, County services, school resources and community partners.

Position Overview

The ON Community Organizer, utilizing community building and organizing techniques, will be a critical member of the ON team, working to ensure children, youth and adults have the access to resources needed to thrive. The ON Community Organizer is responsible for engaging residents, property managers, business owners, the police, county and school staff, elected officials, faith leaders and service providers in the opportunities and strategies involving the five focal areas of the Opportunity Neighborhoods.

Reporting

The ON Community Organizer position reports to the Strategy Manager.

Key Duties

· Recruit, train, and support Neighborhood Ambassadors to be community leaders and among other duties, implement engagement programs in their communities.

· Teach and empower residents to develop solutions to community needs.

· Work with community leaders to support events in targeted communities to meet the needs of low-income communities.

· Collaborate with United Community programs, as well as other stakeholders to address issues and concerns in targeted communities and increase resident engagement and community partnerships.

· Coordinate community empowerment programming across the two Community Schools, Community Centers, other United Community programs, and various neighborhoods.

· Identify gaps and strategize to fill them in community empowerment programming across the Mount Vernon region.

· Educate the community about United Community’s program offerings and work to eliminate barriers for residents accessing those services.

· Develop new and strengthen existing relationships to increase participation and engagement.

· Support the data gathering, entry, analysis, and reporting needs of Opportunity Neighborhood activities, including entering data into United Community’s client services database and Fairfax County’s Opportunity Neighborhood database.

· Prepares monthly Opportunity Neighborhood Mount Vernon progress summary and assists Community Center managers with their monthly reports.

· Co-lead the Opportunity Neighborhood Engagement Team’s monthly meeting of non-profit, county government and school partners.

· Assist with the Opportunity Neighborhood training series for community partners and direct training opportunities for residents.

· Create monthly community calendar and Opportunity Neighborhood Mount Vernon e-newsletter. Maintain the Opportunity Neighborhood Mount Vernon outreach database for the distribution of communications.

· Assist in securing additional support (in-kind or financial), to support community empowerment programming.

· Assist with coverage at Community Centers and Community Schools.

· Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

· Level of Education – Bachelor’s degree.

· Level of Experience – 2-3 years of relevant professional experience

· Bilingual (English/Spanish) is strongly preferred.

· Use of a car with a current driver’s license and insurance is mandatory. Frequent driving is required, but mileage is reimbursed.

· Ability to work flexible hours if needed, including limited evenings and weekends.

· Ability to meet U.S. Department of Justice and Virginia Child Protective Service requirements for employment verification and background checks.

Skills and Experience

· Experience organizing volunteers, community members, events, etc.

· Experience connecting communities together for a common goal.

· Respect for economic and cultural diversity and past experience working with diverse groups.

· Ability to foster collaborations across diverse constituencies in a low income community.

· Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database tools. Experience with communication tools a plus.

· Understanding of program evaluation principles.

Travel

Travel to and from satellite United Community locations and meeting sites within a 3-15-mile radius is expected. Further travel may be required for special events and training opportunities. Mileage reimbursement is provided.
