Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provides a wide-range of legal services aimed to address issues that disproportionately impact the poor.  These services include litigation, providing training and technical assistance, and community education.


NLSLA is currently seeking an Attorney to join our newest housing program aimed at addressing the housing crisis, which has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. The ideal candidate will be a skillful attorney who can excel in a fast-paced, dynamic anti-poverty law practice and is capable of fiercely advocating on behalf of NLSLA clients in multiple forums. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law and prior experience serving low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis. The ideal candidate must possess strong research and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; and well-developed analytical skills. Of critical importance is that the candidate be self-motivated and have the ability to work as part of a collaborative team. Bilingual proficiency in a language commonly spoken in our client communities strongly preferred.

Salary:

Starting at $60,000 and commensurate with experience. Duties and Responsibilities:

This advocate will be expected to staff weekly housing clinics in collaboration with our community-based partners, conduct intake interviews, prepare educational materials. The advocate will manage a caseload commensurate with experience to litigate cases through trial including filing appropriate motions, propounding discovery, prepare trial briefs and engage in settlement negotiations. The advocate will also maintain expertise on a range of housing issues affecting low-income individuals; provide outreach and education to tenants and community groups; and assist with some training and education of support staff and pro bono volunteers/law students. Advocacy may include participation in high-impact projects/litigation involving systemic or policy issues related to evictions/housing as needed. Travel between NLSLA program offices and courts in Antelope Valley, Van Nuys and Chatsworth may be required.


Qualifications:

Candidates should have a JD and membership in the California State Bar. Individuals should be highly motivated and passionate about public service work with excellent writing, speaking and organizational skills. The ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a fast-paced environment are highly desirable. The candidate will be expected to work from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish preferred.
