Communications Specialist

Full-time, non-exempt

Annual Salary Range $48,000-$52,000


Reports to: Director of Grants and Events


This position is part of the development team at the William Way LGBT Community Center and is responsible for implementing the Center’s vision of a unified communications strategy across all platforms to create broad community awareness of Center programs, services, needs, and impact. They will work collaboratively with the entire development team and program staff to inspire people and continue to develop the William Way Community Center as a dynamic asset to Philadelphia. 


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Social Media Management 
  • Ensure that center branding and voice is consistent throughout all social media platforms 
  • Manage organizational Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and all major social media accounts and continuously work to grow followers and reach throughout all platforms 
  • Schedule consistent posts throughout social media platforms, manage comments and direct messages, and include image descriptions on all photographs 
  • Coordinate posts and content with departmental social media accounts (Archives, Trans Resource Center, Peer Counseling, Elder Initiative)
  • Perform basic graphic design in support of social media posts 
  • Mailchimp Management
  • Draft and send weekly community emails, as-needed volunteer emails, and development emails 
  • Maintain and grow email list 
  • Website 
  • Maintain the structural and thematic integrity of the websites (Squarespace and Wordpress)
  • Make content changes as requested
  • Coordinate other backend users of the website
  • Build pages for new and expanded programs and services
  • Maintain website calendar of events
  • Media Relations 
  • Develop and manage integrated media strategy inclusive of television, print, radio, podcasts, and online-only media to broaden the reach of center programs
  • Create and continuously update the organization’s press list 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists and freelance writers
  • Prepare and send press releases 
  • Pitch media stories 
  • Develop signage and marketing materials for events
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled 
  • Additional duties as assigned 


Desired qualifications

  • Energy, enthusiasm and motivation to enhance LGBT programs, services, and advocacy through new communications strategies 
  • Passionate learner who is motivated to take on new challenges 
  • Excellent, clear communication and relationship-building skills. 
  • Comfort, knowledge and expertise utilizing Google applications, Mail Chimp, Squarespace, Wordpress, Adobe Suite, social media platforms (especially Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Tiktok) and other new media platforms 
  • Must have some experience using design tools to help maintain brand consistency.
  • Comfort and proven track record with cold-calling media to pitch stories 
  • Experience with marketing for non-profit organizations
  • Expert at having realistic and sustainable deadlines set from the beginning, creating a reasonable timeline with key performance indicators
  • A creative problem-solver who follows their strategic management, yet can anticipate and quickly adapt when last-minute problems arise
  • A strong background in research who is proficient in digital data & analytics/marketing tools. 
  • A critical and creative thinker who is able to translate insights and trends into informed strategies that are measurable. 
  • A strong communicator and be able to evaluate and explain data in a way that’s easy for others to understand. 
  • Socially aware, understanding of the audience and community of LGBT+ individuals, and the commitment to WWCC’s mission.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent lived experience.


As a small organization operating in a very dynamic environment, a significant amount of flexibility and teamwork is required. Employees are expected to work collaboratively to ensure WWCC’s success.

Compensation

This is a full-time, non-exempt position.

Annual salary range: $48,000-$52,000.

Benefits include: health and dental insurance, paid time off, 401k options, flexible health spending account, pre-tax transit program, flexible work schedule and relaxed work environment.

Typical hours are Mon-Fri from 9am-5pm, but some evenings and weekends are required to attend meetings and events.
