The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) was founded in 2000 with one clear objective: accelerating meaningful therapeutic advances and, ultimately, a cure for Parkinson’s disease (PD). The Foundation applies extraordinary scientific, business and media assets to this singular focus—thus creating a unique and dynamic organization. Since inception, MJFF has quickly grown into the largest global funder of Parkinson’s disease research outside the U. S. federal government, having funded over $800 million in research projects in both academic and industry labs worldwide.


Core to our philosophy is how we think of our capital and its risk profile relative to other stakeholders in the drug development pipeline. We work aggressively to de-risk various therapeutic strategies and tools in the hopes of building a robust pipeline of new treatments for patients. In order to achieve our mission of finding a cure for PD it is critical that we engage with, and bring together, members of the PD community including researchers, physicians, health professionals and most important, people with Parkinson's and their families. We believe that raising the Foundation’s profile with a broader audience will help us more efficiently reach and mobilize highly engaged stakeholders who are more likely to feel personally vested in helping speed progress toward a cure.


We believe that to find a cure for PD as quickly as possible, our capital needs to push research forward today—we therefore deliberately have no endowment. We instead start our fundraising from zero each year and seek to deploy funds raised as quickly and wisely as possible. MJFF raises over $90 million annually. Today, the Foundation has approximately 130 full-time employees who are based in New York City.


Within MJFF, the Research Programs team supports the Foundation’s mission of accelerating development of new and improved PD therapies through a number of activities. The Research Programs Team is responsible for developing the strategic research agenda and priorities for MJFF scientific initiatives and leveraging this agenda to shape the MJFF PD scientific point of view. This is done by collaborating with key opinion leaders in targeted areas of PD Research and drug development Our team, through a rigorous selection process, make determinations on the most appropriate research projects for funding as well as generating grant making opportunities for the research community.

 

Position summary

 

The Associate Director, Research Programs, plays a key role in executing the MJFF research agenda. With an understanding of key concepts in biomedical research and/or drug development, the Associate Director will play a major role in ensuring that the PD research community have timely access to the most innovative research tools including reagents and pre-clinical models, to understand the cause and mechanisms underlying Parkinson's disease and to develop effective treatments. The primary responsibilities of this position include project management of the development of these tools by collaborators, researchers/grantees and other partners to meet goals of the priority research areas of MJFF.


The Associate Director should be able to fit in a culture of urgency, resourcefulness and ownership where his/her contributions will have an impact on Parkinson’s research. This position also provides a platform to actively participate in a variety of activities critical to our mission which will allow for an opportunity to learn, expand role and develop career.


Successful candidates will be comfortable working in a collaborative team environment, be highly capable at delving into projects to support aggressive team goals and have the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously. Successful candidates will also be willing and able to work within the foundations many different program areas. The Associate Director reports to a Director, Research Programs.


This is a full-time position located in New York City.


Primary roles and responsibilities:

·      Function as the project manager for activities related to the planning and execution of research tools projects from grant or contract award to product development, validation, product creation, mechanism of distribution and storage.

·      Work collaboratively with internal and external scientists to obtain a working knowledge of various targets and participate in structural decisions to facilitate generation of research tool (e.g., antibodies, assays, animal models) including coordinate technology transfer activities if needed.

·      Interact with internal and external scientific leads to understand their requirements for a research tool (e.g., antibodies, assays, animal models) to disseminate and partner with the right developers/vendors/CROs.

·      Actively participate in finding ways to improve existing process/mechanism in developing research tools and identify new ways to increase efficiency and production including vendor sourcing and cost reduction projects.

·      Provide project updates to Functional Directors and Program Officers to assure goal alignment towards achieving project milestones and timetables through ongoing clear, concise communication and motivation.

·      Work closely with Program Officers to ensure oversight of grants to individual investigators, universities, and other specialized partners; manages relationship and project delivery lifecycle from proposal process through post-award to close out.

·      Work closely with Scientific Leads and Program Officers to manage and prioritize the production schedule as it relates to deliverables and deadlines.

·      Organize and lead certain project and vendor communications/meetings, including recording meeting minutes, tracking action items, preparing meeting agendas, and disseminating project information.

·      Establish, track and manage project schedule/critical path activities, status reporting, and resource plan development to ensure projects are completed on time, on-schedule and within budget.

·      Proactively identify issues that may lead to scope changes, planning conflicts and/or cost changes.

·      Communicate risks in a timely manner and recommend appropriate risk mitigation strategies, contingencies, and actions to be taken.

·      Present the status of the projects to the senior leadership team as required and other MJFF staff on programmatic activities and progress.

 

Qualifications:

·      Master’s degree in life sciences, engineering or medically related field is preferred or a business degree, such as an MBA or Masters in a business-related area or Ph.D. in Biological Science (Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry or related disciplines)

·      Minimum 2-3 years of technical project management. A highly organized, self-directed team player with relevant experience in product development in a biotechnology industry or life sciences, or technology transfer a plus.

·      Must be proficient in Microsoft Office tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc. and project management tools like Asana.

·      Flexible and able to adapt to a culture of urgency, resourcefulness and ownership.

 

Knowledge & Experience:

·      Working knowledge of state-of-the-art technologies and methods for design and optimization of research tools and preclinical models.

·      Good understanding of what drives resource requirements. Experience outsourcing and managing projects with CROs is useful but not required.

·      Background in negotiating complex agreements/contracts such as Master Service Agreements, Material Transfer and License Agreements, etc.

·      Experience developing clearly defined project goals, create and manage task lists and establish appropriate timelines using appropriate project management tools.

·      Effective communication to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels within the organization and contract partners.
