As a member of the Corpsmember Academy faculty team, the Math teacher will develop customized curriculum for a variety of math courses. Experience with blended learning platforms and tools in implementing curriculum is highly preferred. The Math teacher will be responsible for pedagogically-engaging lesson plans that reflect the needs of our students. Experience with relevant and original curriculum design and implementation is highly preferred, as the Math teacher will participate actively in the overall planning, implementation and assessment of individual learning and program success.
Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a year-round (12-month) program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Understand how to effectively engage youth and how to motivate them to want to learn.
- Recognize the barriers to success faced by 18-26 year olds without a high school education.
- Strong and open communication with students and staff.
- 1:1 mentoring skills.
- Commitment to maintaining a positive and productive work environment.
- Ability to model professionalism to students through personal and pedagogical conduct.
- Participate in the Advisory Program (advise up to three advisees every term).
- Appreciation for and ability to create a differentiated learning experience that meets the needs of all learners.
- Create curriculum and assessment tools informed by data.
- Design and deliver creative, participatory instruction in the following subjects: Pre-Algebra; Algebra; Geometry. Material covered will include fractions and decimals, basic algebra, expressions, systems of equations, functions, graphing lines, factoring, geometry and mathematical reasoning.
- Document lessons and ensure lessons are tied to the Common Core.
- Design and/or utilize a variety of standard and alternative methods to assess student progress including standardized testing, observation of demonstrations, interviews, rubrics, and portfolio completions.
Assessments and Reporting
- Administer intake and periodic standardized assessments and orient new students.
- Access and utilize information from NWEA reports to create individualized lesson plans.
- Evaluate student transcripts and counsel students toward academic success.
- Refer students for special academic, personal and vocational services as needed.
- Assist with projects outside the classroom to enhance community-building, and with celebrations, such as monthly cultural awareness programs and graduations.
- Participate in faculty committees and activities to integrate student vocational and academic learning.
- Contribute special talents and interests to broaden the experience of youth in the Corpsmember Academy.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from a four-year college or university.
- One to two years related experience and/or training in youth development, middle or high school educational program, community-based organization or other youth centered environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Math credential preferred.
- Resource Specialist and/or Special Education background a plus.
- Experience with NWEA preferred.
- Ability to pass state and federal criminal background checks as well as a TB test.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Fluency in a second language is helpful.
- Commitment to serving the East Bay community as well as an interest in stewardship for the environment and working with youth.
- Passion for teaching and working with students from urban communities.
- Demonstrated ability to design, deliver and evaluate curriculum to meet needs of students with multiple learning styles, language skills, literacy levels, and interests.
- Dedication to working closely and cooperatively in a community-based organization with diverse staff, students, families and/or partnerships.
- Ability to provide leadership and serve as a mentor.
- Sense of humor, high ethical professional standards, multi-cultural perspective, and deep enjoyment of teaching.
- Flexible and adaptable to change and/or ability to acquire the necessary skills to work in a creative and demanding learning environment.
- Ability to work in an open, fast-paced, nontraditional agency under high pressure and deadlines.
- Computer literate and enthusiasm for integration of technology in the learning environment.
- Awareness of, and familiarity with, California State standards for secondary education.
