Description

Connecticut Fair Housing Center seeks a staff attorney for a litigation and casework role. The staff attorney will represent and advise individuals and organizations in litigating housing discrimination, eviction, and other housing-related cases in state and federal court and before administrative agencies. The Center uses advocacy and litigation to vindicate the rights of those affected by discrimination and to pursue systemic change to end segregation and remove barriers to housing choice. We have an office in Hartford. We offer the ability to work remotely but the position requires the ability to attend in-person hearings, meetings, and events in Connecticut, potentially on short notice. 

 Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Client counseling and advice; 
  • Pre-litigation advocacy; 
  • Handling a civil litigation caseload including filing state and federal court and administrative complaints, conducting discovery, depositions, motions, trials, and post-trial litigation; 
  • Staffing complex cases under supervision of senior attorneys; 

* Working collaboratively with other programs and initiatives to promote housing justice and further equal access to housing for all. 

Qualifications: 

  • Juris Doctor from accredited law school; 
  • Civil rights or housing Litigation experience beneficial but not required; 
  • Connecticut bar membership, ability to waive in, or willingness to sit for the next bar exam; 
  • Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills; 
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team as necessary; 
  • Experience working with people confronting trauma and stress; 
  • Desire for a career as a civil litigator in public interest law at a non-profit organization;
  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights;;  
  • Spanish language proficiency helpful but not required. 

 Salary & Benefits: $80,000+, depending on experience, plus 401(k) with employer contribution, health, vision, dental, and life insurance and annual paid personal time, vacation time, and sick leave.
