Media Matters for America—a progressive, Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media—seeks a candidate with expertise in engaging with advocacy organizations, cultivating and elevating issue-specific content (including but not limited to social justice, reproductive rights, climate/science, and extremism and disinformation), and sustaining and executing long-term projects to serve as the Communications Manager.


Role Summary:

The Communications Manager (Long-Term & Special Projects) works closely with Media Matters’ special program teams and the Deputy Communications Director to develop media pitch angles and outreach strategies to help bolster long-term and special projects and content to the wider public.


Reporting Structure:

  • The Communications Manager reports to the Deputy Communications Director.

Responsibilities: 

Advocacy and Partner Outreach

  • Serves as a thought partner with the Deputy Communications Director on outreach and strategy to external MMFA partners related to MMFA special programs and priority initiatives. Those initiatives include tech/social media accountability and Fox News accountability.
  • Attends coalition and partner organization meetings to flag and promote MMFA’s data and research expertise. Develops ways to integrate that information into partner organizations’ priorities and builds relationships with pertinent contacts.
  • Identifies existing event opportunities for MMFA staff to participate in and helps to create and execute events. 

Media Relations

  • Flags rapid response content produced by Media Matters for issue-specific media contacts (including but not limited to immigration, education, health care, social justice, abortion rights and reproductive health, climate and energy, and guns and public safety).
  • Identifies new press contacts around special program area content and studies, which may include light touch outreach to press contacts.
  • Consult on rapid response press facing materials on Media Matters’ priority initiatives.

 Collateral Creation

  • Assists in writing advocacy-focused sign-on letters, emails, and sample social media content.
  • Create compelling content that mobilizes Media Matters’ supporters and partners to participate in Media Matters campaigns, and assists with the creation of campaign assets with MMFA staff members, including consulting on graphics and videos concepts.
  • Assists in compiling and writing strategy and success documents.
  • Assists in creating products for both media and external affairs audiences.


Required Qualifications:

  • At least 4 years of PR and media relations or strategic communications and writing experience, preferably in community engagement, the nonprofit or public sector, politics, or regulatory matters.
  • Strong understanding of issue-based and/or advocacy causes and/or has been part of an advocacy campaign.
  • Experience developing and executing digital campaigns as well as long term and special projects.
  • Experience securing impactful press placements and thinking outside the box to create media moments.
  • Clear sense of the political media landscape and on top of the latest breaking political news.
  • Strong decision-making abilities and accountability.
  • Incredibly organized, detail-oriented, and able to excel at managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Track record of success with placing political or cause stories in national or regional outlets.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Established relationships with progressive allies and experience working in coalitions, with the ability to grow and steward Media Matters’ outreach in this area.
  • Experience working with issue-based and/or advocacy causes or has been part of an advocacy campaign.
