About Us

Guided Pathways – Support for Youth and Families (GPS) is a King County-based, non-profit, family support organization founded with the support of the King County Department of Community and Human Services, Behavioral Health Division and Recovery (BHRD). Our mission is:

We are families helping families. We empower and support families and youth struggling with behavioral, emotional or substance abuse challenges in navigating resources to achieve wellness and resilience.

GPS is currently recruiting for a young adult between ages 19 to 29 to support, mentor and empower King County youth ages 11 to 24 who are struggling with behavioral, emotional, mental health and/or substance abuse challenges. We strive to build on our youth’s strengths by giving peer support to achieve wellness, recovery and resiliency.

Our ideal Youth Peer brings their own experience, knowledge and understanding of the difficulties that youth may be having and can guide them through life challenges.

Young Adults from historically underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Specific Areas of Responsibility

  • Develop healthy, supportive relationships with assigned youth
  • Help youth navigate through the educational, criminal justice and behavioral health systems
  • Provide resources to youth
  • Able to act as a cheerleader, coach and advocate for peers and youth
  • Attend supervisory/case review sessions
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Stay current and informed about social media habits and trends
  • Support projects such as leadership for youth, youth support groups and recreational activities
  • Participate in outreach and engagement activities
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client information and act in a manner that is consistent with GPS policies and procedures
  • Work occasional evenings and weekends as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Highschool Degree or GED
  • Lived experience with behavioral, emotional, mental health or substance abuse challenges
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license
  • Ability to pass criminal background and driving record checks
  • Reliable transportation and proof of car insurance
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally
  • Strong active-listening skills
  • Good relationship building skills and ability to maintain constructive relationship boundaries with youth, youth’s family and other GPS staff
  • Willing to learn new technologies
  • Tolerance and openness to different world views and sensitivity to other cultures, languages, religions and sexual orientations
  • Responsible, committed to the position and to the organization’s mission

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional and/or volunteer experience in youth leadership, mentoring, advocacy and/or education
  • AA degree in Human Services or similar
