    About Trail Blazers

    In 1887, John Ames Mitchell, editor of Life magazine, raised $800 to send 266 children from New York City to the Life Fresh Air Farm in Branchville, Connecticut. Since that first summer, thousands of children and teens have participated in our nature-based summer camp and after-school programs in New York and New Jersey. Our play-based programs are designed with social emotional learning at the forefront, and focus on environmental science, experiential learning, and outdoor adventures.

    Our overnight camp program is situated on 1000 forested acres in northwest New Jersey. We hold the strong belief that every child deserves the opportunity to play, learn, and grow at camp, and our extensive scholarship program ensures that Trail Blazers is accessible for all.

    Summary of Position

    The Overnight Camp Director is a proactive and hands-on leader. They are responsible for the development and direct implementation of our residential summer camp program. This is a full time, exempt position reporting to the Director of Programs. The position requires 3 months living on site at camp, with room and board provided.

    Essential Functions

    • Camper Recruitment
      • Develop strategy for meeting enrollment goals, with attention to families who come to us directly as well as relationships with social service agencies and referral sources
      • Manage a schedule of camp fairs, info sessions, open houses, and recruitment visits at schools and community organizations
      • Develop and maintain trusting relationships with parents and families
      • Review and respond to camper and family feedback
    • Program Development
      • With guidance from the Director of Programs, develop and manage program budgets
      • Create high quality and intentional summer programming in collaboration with the Director of Programs
      • Develop and manage preseason staff training
      • Manage external vendors and outside program partners
      • Support seasonal staff hiring in coordination with the Human Resources team
    • Summer Program Operations
      • Responsible for all aspects of day-to-day camp operations
      • Supervise a team of seasonal directors who in turn supervise all front line staff, providing ongoing coaching and feedback
      • Ensure compliance with Department of Health regulations and American Camp Association accreditation standards
      • Ensure effective and consistent communication with parents and agency partners about campers
      • Create a joyful camp environment, making sure that campers smile, that you hear laughter every day, and that the camp program is executed in a way that encourages challenge and growth
    • Off-Season Program Development
      • Manage pre and post season events including alumni weekend, family camp, school field trips, retreats, and weddings
      • Collaborate with the Program team to create appropriate programming and activities based on event size, group interests, budget, and schedule
      • Develop and manage relationships with existing and new external partners

    Job Specifications

    • Overnight camp administrative and leadership experience is a non-negotiable requirement
    • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible managerial and supervisory experience in a camp setting
    • Experience with environmental science, outdoor education, or outdoor adventure programming preferred
    • Substantial knowledge of youth/child development
    • Demonstrated success cultivating environments that empower others to lead
    • High-level analytic, problem-solving, verbal, and written communications skills
    • Must meet all ACA standards for resident camp directors, including a minimum age of 25
    • Willingness to live on-site in Montague New Jersey for the duration of the summer, June - August
    • Current advanced CPR/first aid certification, or willingness to procure
    • Ability to interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
    • Ability to remain stationary for up to 70% of the work day
    • Ability to move safely around the office
    • Ability to climb flights of stairs
    • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
    • Ability to move over rough terrain for extended periods of time
    • Ability to recognize and respond to dangerous situations

    Position Details

    • This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position
    • Regular off-season hours of work are Monday - Friday, 9/10am - 5/6pm, with occasional evening or weekend hours; hours of work increase during the summer
    • This position will begin in office; a hybrid schedule is possible after a period of onboarding
