Position Summary:


The Associate Vice President of Individual Giving will join BGCB at an inflection point in the organization’s 125-year history.  The organization just completed its historic Opening Doors $131 million fundraising campaign. This effort has pivoted BGCB toward its future work to strengthen our community and expanded its mission-focused work of creating hope and opportunity for Boston and Chelsea youth.

BGCB has a long-standing reputation for delivering top-quality, highly-effective afterschool and summer programs for children and teens in our community and operates 11 Clubs in neighborhoods throughout Boston and Chelsea, as well as YouthConnect. It is a priority for BGCB to be an accessible and affordable place for the young people we serve, and while it costs nearly $3,100 to serve each member, BGCB charges $25/year for children ages 6-12 and just $5/year for teens – making contributed support, which accounts for 80% of the organization’s annual revenues, a critical component to sustain our operations.

The AVP will report to the EVP of Development & Marketing and be joined by the Vice President, Development and the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications as members of the EVP’s cabinet working together to enhance BGCB’s high caliber fundraising program that reflects BGCB’s culture, mission, goals, and evolving strategic plan.


ABOUT THE POSITION

The Associate Vice President of Individual Giving is responsible for oversight and management of all individual giving efforts and for growing the donor prospect pipeline for gifts from individuals at all levels. The AVP will implement new and enhanced strategies designed to establish a transformational gift platform of eight-figure+ gifts and increase donor retention and upgrade activity at all levels. The incumbent will develop strategies and solicitation plans in concert with volunteer and agency leadership, and participate in the solicitation process as appropriate. S/he will manage a portfolio of top donors and prospective donors while managing agency efforts around cultivating, securing, and stewarding planned gifts. The AVP will work closely with senior leadership and development staff (CEO, EVP of Development & Marketing, VP of Development) as well as Major Gifts Committee members to execute overall fundraising goals. S/he will also serve as a member of senior leadership team of the Development Office and manage a team of nine staff.


STRATEGY, PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

  • Work closely with the EVP of Development & Marketing to advance post-campaign fundraising strategies that will result in reaching financial goals to provide ongoing support of all BGCB Clubs and programs.
  • Project, track, and meet fundraising goals for annual operating support and special initiatives.
  • Create an annual business plan to meet financial goals. Analyze results and adjust plans accordingly.
  • Manage a team of nine fundraisers including principal and major gifts, planned gifts, annual fund, individual giving events, and Club relations.
  • Oversee growing the Planned Giving program; develop effective marketing efforts to boards, alumni and friends.
  • Oversee the Development liaison to BGCB’s facilities-based and shared-space Clubs in coordinating, supporting, and optimizing local fundraising efforts.


DONOR MANAGEMENT

  • Serve as prospect manager for principal and major gift prospects, including research and strategy development.
  • Work closely with the CEO and EVP of Development & Marketing to define new initiatives that can increase the donor base, including the Friends Council, Artemis Circle, Champion Society, and new initiatives to be identified.
  • Collaborate with the CEO, EVP, prospect management and development staff on identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies and opportunities for principal and major gifts donors and prospects; participate in solicitations as appropriate.
  • Research and compose special proposals and letters to major gifts donors as appropriate; oversee database tracking of major gifts activities; research prospects and donors as needed.


VOLUNTEER AND SENIOR MANAGEMENT STAFFING

  • Staff the Major Gifts Committee, including strategy sessions with co-chairs, development of Committee agenda, production of materials, and staff follow-up from meetings to drive next steps.
  • Oversee Board of Trustees engagement including annual Trustee meetings, TLC meetings, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Oversee implementation of donor strategies with key volunteers and BGCB staff.
  • Work with the EVP of Development & Marketing to set activity and revenue goals for major gifts and annual fund efforts and monitor progress toward these goals.
  • Manage support and growth of annual fund integrated marketing program including digital engagement, social media, direct mail, emerging technologies and other donor communication.
  • Develop briefings, letters, proposals, presentation decks, speaking points and related materials for key volunteers, CEO and EVP as it relates to prospects and donors.
  • Perform special tasks, duties and projects as assigned.


KEY QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will be a strategic team player who is visionary about BGCB’s fundraising potential and who can support the EVP’s entrepreneurial and creative initiatives to maximize results. The AVP will have a proven track record in major gift fundraising, with outstanding interpersonal competencies and the ability to manage and mentor a team, work well with colleagues, and effectively engage volunteer leadership. The AVP will be an experienced, mature, and talented fundraiser looking for a position where ideas outside of traditional fundraising are encouraged and supported.


IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS

An entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to succeed in a diverse and dynamic culture.

A bachelor’s degree and, preferably, a master’s degree in management/business or a related field.

Eight to ten years of fundraising experience and proven success as a fundraiser with campaign, major gifts, annual giving and Board management experience.

Orientation as a team player and leader with strong management skills and a hands-on, goal-oriented approach to projects, management and new ideas.

Unwavering commitment to youth development and the value this work instills in our children and teens, their families, our neighborhoods, and the cities of Boston and Chelsea

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational and analytical skills, and project management skills.

Experience with Board volunteer management and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
