Job Description

The Bridge, an innovative and well respected mental health agency serving adults with serious mental illness, substance abuse, co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders, and co-morbid medical conditions is seeking a Horticulture and Employment Coordinator to join its Outpatient Services department.

Scope of Job:

  • Implements Horticultural program according to current professional standards while incorporating seasonal changes and special horticultural projects. Selects horticulture activities to meet individuals’ goals and adapts activities as necessary
  • Responsible for curriculum design and instruction for gardening and wellness workshops including the following: composting, integrative pest management, sustainability and garden design
  • Instructs individuals in proper horticulture techniques
  • Assists in maintaining the horticulture facilities, gardens, supplies and equipment.
  • Performs plant maintenance duties when necessary (grooming, fertilizing, watering, pest control, planting) and oversees volunteers and Transitional Employment participants of the program
  • Works directly with agency Maintenance department to ensure proper upkeep of urban gardens
  • Responsible for planning and oversight of program supplies and needs and notify supervisor when supplies are low
  • Assists in operating special activities such as plant display, sales and shows
  • Responsible for the chart management of PROS participants
  • Engage participants in a trusting, collaborative relationship directed toward the goal of obtaining competitive employment
  • Provide individual and group counseling, skill-building, support and therapy services, including admissions, assessments, treatment planning and discharges utilizing evidence-based/best and trauma informed practices
  • Develop and implement group and individual services, including identifying and/or creating curricula that meets the needs and interests of service recipients
  • Assess participants vocational functioning on an ongoing basis utilizing their skill sets, background information and work experiences
  • Help participants link their strengths and preferences to specific types of jobs and work settings
  • Provide individualized follow along supports (case management) as it pertains to job success or obtaining better employment opportunities
  • Encourage participants to carry out job search and job performance as independently as possible
  • Provide resume writing and interview preparation immediately upon enrollment
  • Document all participant contacts and services (Individual Recovery Planning, progress notes, employment info etc.) in electronic health record and NYESS in a timely manner and reports necessary outcomes to governing bodies (CPI, OMH, etc.)
  • Maintain monthly contact with community mental health treatment providers and/or Access-VR counselors in order to coordinate services for shared participants and develop new referrals
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Program Director or Administrative Leadership

Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services related field with emphasis on courses in horticultural therapy, psychology, horticulture, education and/or recreation therapy or recreation and 1+ years of experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental health and/or co-occurring substance use issues required OR Master’s degree in a social service related field from an accredited college and one year of professional experience preferred
  • Certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) strongly preferred
  • Greenhouse and garden experience required
  • Strong professional boundaries are a must
  • Visibility of work requires the ability to work in a fast paced environment, multi-task, and attention to detail
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, professional presentation and excellent interpersonal/customer service skills
  • Must have knowledge of the current software including Word, Excel, etc.
  • Strong presentation and networking skills
  • Must be a team player and have strong work ethic
  • Must be flexible, creative and energetic
  • Navigate and negotiate through difficult situations
  • Frequent field work to various neighborhoods across NYC, must be comfortable traveling by public transportation and climbing stairs
