Job Description

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks to hire a relocation housing relocation specialist with a commitment to social justice to join our Civil Justice Practice. This position includes helping clients locate affording housing, which requires relevant knowledge about housing resources and options in New York City. Tasks will include assisting clients with filling out housing applications, preparing application packets, advocating with Public Assistance and Charities to secure the funds necessary to find housing, helping Attorneys identify and litigate affirmative discrimination in housing cases, and give reports to the various courts where BDS practices.

Background

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is one of the largest public defense providers in the United States, representing about 30,000 clients annually in New York City, primarily indigent criminal, family, and immigration defense.  The Civil Justice Practice (CJP) was formed to provide legal services to existing clients of BDS’ criminal, family and immigration defense practices with an aim of reducing civil collateral consequences to ensure that justice system involvement does not result in broader, and often more permanent, harm. The Housing and Benefits team of the Civil Justice Practice assists some of the city’s most vulnerable residents to remain in their homes, maintain their public benefits, protect their consumer rights and reclaim their NYPD seized property.

Qualifications

We seek a dynamic person with experience identifying housing resources and advocating for low-income populations. The ideal candidate has a strong desire to develop a multi-disciplinary advocacy skill-set and is comfortable with an approach dedicated to best serving a population with contacts with the criminal, family and immigration justice system. This position will be supervised by the Attorney in Charge of BDS’ Housing and Benefits Practice.
