One Community Action, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the future and vibrancy of the Santa Maria Valley community, is seeking Case Manager Specialists to join our Por Vida program. Founded in 2016 to advance community-centered solutions that address systemic inequities at the roots of the violence and despair, OCA focuses on Community Building, Education, and Resources that meet the needs of the community. 


In partnership with the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District, and under the direction and supervision of the Program Manager, the Por Vida program provides high-quality services to under-served high school students and their families as they face challenges due to various inter and intra-personal issues, such as mental wellness challenges, drug and alcohol use/abuse, and life management skills. Por Vida case managers are passionate about OCA mission as we work with students and their families, individually and in groups, in English and Spanish, using a culturally competent curriculum. We empower students in four high schools to improve their time management, goal setting, self-esteem building, and stress management in order that they succeed in school and in life.


SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Responsible for planning and implementation of program directives which meet agency regulatory standards. 
  • Provide oversight of cultural proficiency and cultural responsibility to program services.
  • Provide a safe and healthy environment for high school students. 
  • Complete and implement plan sheets weekly or similar documentation.
  • Establish positive interpersonal relationships among all individuals in the program. 
  • Use approved discipline techniques when managing a student’s behavior.
  • Consider each student in relation to his/her cultural and socioeconomic background, treating each student with dignity and respect.
  • Record daily attendance and know the number, names and age of students in their assigned group at all times.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Principals, Counselors, and Teachers from assigned high school to effectively serve the Por Vida Program students.
  • Conduct Zoom meetings, phone calls, texting, and emails to communicate with students/parents. 
  • Assessment and management of student caseload at assigned high school.
  • Help manage student educational needs and other adjunct services in areas such as mental health, substance abuse, and other community resources.
  • Work with students to create a mutual service plan that they can accomplish.
  • Maintain Adult/Parents notes on progress, attendance and relevant information (ex: surveys).
  • Maintain regular contact with SMJUHSD liaison and provide monthly reports.
  • Observe scheduled work hours, punctual and prepared.
  • Maintain confidentiality of parents, students and staff. 
  • Function as a cooperative member of the team including school district personnel.
  • Attend regular (weekly) staff meetings and agency training as required. 
  • Conduct program/student assessments as required. 
  • Recognize, document and take appropriate action of suspected child abuse and neglect, (Mandated Reporting).
  • Perform other job functions and duties as required by the Program Coordinator.


EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have an Associate Degree in Human Services or related field. Some education can be substituted for on a year per year basis. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum (2) years of experience working with youth or related field in a nonprofit setting.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification preferred, or the ability to successfully complete training. 
  • Experience with National Compadres Network curriculums or be willing to receive training on the curriculum: Joven Noble, Cara y Corazón, and Xinachtli.
  • Knowledge of racial equity and trauma informed approaches 
  • Must have a valid California Driver's License and Liability Auto Insurance.
  • Must pass a Department of Justice background check and TB test.


SKILLS: 

  • Bicultural and Bilingual in Spanish & English required.
  • Ability to perform all job requirements satisfactorily and meet the Education/Experience, Personal Skills/Characteristics, Qualifications, Physical Conditions, & Work Environment and Work ethics.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to interpret a variety of instructions provided in writing and orally. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiar with Zoom, Google Suite, and other digital technology.
  • Resourceful, well-organized, able to solve practical problems and manage a variety of situations. 
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • High energy level, ability to work independently with limited supervision. 
  • Strong commitment for doing what is right for students. 
  • Displays sound judgment in all situations, especially working with students and families. 


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • Requires daily standing, sitting, bending and stooping.  
  • Requires normal range of hearing and vision. 
  • Requires the ability to lift 20 pounds.
  • Ability to work odd schedules (flexibility is important). 


CONTRACT DETAILS

  • Hourly wage $20-22 / hour, dependent on experience.
  • Position is full-time (40 hour per week).
  • Contract through June 30th, with the option to extend into the 2021-2022 school year, depending on performance evaluation and funding. 
  • Management has the right to revise this job description at any time. The job description is not a contract for employment. OCA is an at-will employer.
